Everyone knows about W Hotels' little gift shops chock full of purple merchandise, but what about the actual stores aligning themselves with hotels? With Gansevoort Hotels, for example, retail names like Big Drop NYC, Inca Swimwear and Henry Beguelin have made homes for themselves within the properties, not to mention the presence of Wilhelmina Modeling Agency at the Gansevoort South.
Still, we find ourselves a bit enamored with the idea of bringing the hotel room experience into our own homes, something many have chosen to do with the purchase of Westin's famous "Heavenly Bed." Just check out the numbers:
'The first week [in 1999], 32 people called and said, "I would like to buy that bed," ' says Sue Brush, global brand leader for Westin Hotels and Resorts. To date, the chain of 173 hotels has sold 30,000 beds, more than 100,000 pillows, 32,000 sheet sets and 13,000 shower heads.
While this is a step beyond keeping the room robe, we don't blame anyone for their purchases. After all, we'd live in a hotel in a hot second, but for now we guess we'll settle for a shower head.
