Our transport emotions have been on a proper rollercoaster today. After we saw this picture on Flickr of the Smart cars available for rent to guests at the Hotel Le Bristol in Paris, we were having fantasies about zipping round ze boulevards and down ze Seine in the modern, greener equivalent of a 2CV.

Until we asked the hotel if they cars were still available, and they said no. We tempered our disappointment with the relief that that parking space looked like a toughie to get out of.

But then we got another update: the hotel says that the cars are still there, and guests can still use them. Unlike most other things in Paris, it doesn’t cost a cent, and you even get a free GPS system thrown in with the car.

There are only two cars, and, as long as you produce your license, they’re yours for half a day. So take one! And enjoy getting it in and out of the parking slots. Just don’t leave anything valuable in it – we’re thinking that advertising that you've just come from a tres chic hotel is not the best way to stave off thieves.
