What's It Gonna Be, Hilton: Quinn or Denizen?

March 9, 2009 at 10:46 AM | by Jenna | 7 Comments

The Cosmopolitan resort development in Las Vegas: the future home of Hilton's Project Global21?

The tip line has been on fire this week as the excitement mounts for Hilton's unveiling of their new boutique brand, which has been referred to only as Project Global21 up to this point. We know the big announcement is coming sometime tomorrow (March 10th), with the news hitting the International Hotel Investment Forum in Berlin first.

We've been going back and forth on the upcoming brand's name for a while: we'd heard Quinn initially, then a few commenters brought a couple more possibilities to the table ("Vox" among them) — but we'd never really agreed on anything. And as we wait for the official word, some anonymous tipsters have swooped in to give us the inside scoop.

Over the weekend, commenter KeatyKat dropped this little gem into our Quinn comment thread:

A friend who works for a vendor of Hilton told me that they sent this enormous freight to Berlin to be revealed at their opening event and it had a Q on it in different color. Could that be the clue? Hello?

Hmm. But we've been hearing that the new name is going to be Denizen. We've also heard other names of Kendara and Social.

What makes all this particularly interesting is that HC's own Andrew Calvo had recently pointed out the possibility that the mysterious Cosmopolitan development would be Global21's birthplace, based on the timing of all the announcements that were set to happen this week. So will this be the new Quinn/Denizen/Kendara/Social? Only time will tell. We'll of course be reporting back whatever we hear as soon as it happens.

But for now, let's go back to this newest name thrown into the ring: Denizen? Officially, this is "a person admitted to residence in a foreign country; especially: an alien admitted to rights of citizenship." Hmmm. That doesn't particularly scream "comfy hotel rooms" or "chic lifestyle brand" to us — but we suppose we'll wait for the official word before we get distraught.

Anyone got any more last-minute news on the mysterious Project Global21? Send it our way.

    BRILLIANT NAME

I hope the name is Denizen! That actually makes sense rather than many of the names out there which are made up with no real meaning.  I am thrilled to hear Hilton finally with the help of the new realm on board is creating something real.  And if it is the antidote for attitude good for Ross and his team.  Its about time.

    Denizen

I like Denizen... It makes me think of Humphrey Bogart in Casablanca. It's a word that evokes international intrigue, a slightly melancholy sexiness. It's elitist and opaque. It says we live in a high stakes, borderless world now, stripped of our naive illusions. I see gorgeous blondes in trenchcoats (collar turned up), Clive Owen, empty rainswept streets. Diana Rigg in the Avengers. I want to have an affair here. (A doomed affair, of course, that makes me question all my lifelong held beliefs.)

As for "Social" ugh, that is so early 2000's "Sex in the City" And Quinn- too Irish. Vox - forget it - Vox is like, Hi, I'm P-Diddy, buy my vodka!

    New Hilton Brand

Well, we know the Quinn is mighty. Also "Avenue Q" was a big hit.  Denizens is good, considering they are those who frequent places. Kendara sounds magical, like Kenahara. Or is it kenahora, yiddish for "lucky."  But Social?  Please, no. Wouldn't want guests to be called Socialistas.  I also like the name Prestige?  Bueller?  Bueller Anyone?

Sorry to burst your bubble Elizabeth and Ed...

It's definitely going to called the Quinn. Check out the out the Quinn website and you'll see it redirects you to the Project Global 21 website. I'm glad it's the Quinn, I like that name better.
