We have to hand it to Kimpton for their newest hotel. Since opening Feb. 12, the Lorien Hotel & Spa in Alexandria, Virginia, has managed — first of all — to impress us (no easy feat). And now that three weeks have passed, we thought it high time to dig deep into the first take on the guest experience in the often ugly, no-holds-barred world of TripAdvisor.

Except, well, hmm. Seven reviewers, seven perfect ratings. If you’re like us, overly glowing reviews strike you as a little suspect — especially for a brand-new hotel. But these reviews just don’t sound particularly phony. On the contrary, they read like the words of genuinely happy customers. And get this: The hotel’s GM actually responded to five of the reviews, even including his phone number and email address so guests can get in touch if/when they return. Wowza.

A few highlights: “If you are looking for a 5-star experience for not a 5-star price, I recommend this hotel,” says nep1984 from LA. TraceyPhoenix from, uh, Phoenix, was apparently the Lorien’s “first guest of record.” Here’s what she had to say: “It was dreamy…they really rolled out the red carpet for us - champagne, fresh flowers, yummy treats left in our room...” Yeah, we’d be a fan of that too.

But at least one reviewer noted some opening kinks, if not particularly scandalous ones. From princessres in Boston: “This hotel is brand new. We ran into a few glitches because of this and the staff bent over backwards to correct them… It is the friendliest hotel service we have had in a long time. They even fixed a flat on our car while it was in valet parking.” Well that’s just impressive, we must say.

And, finally, one other reviewer griped about “minor design flaws,” but called them trivial (e.g. lack of handrails in the shower, awkwardly placed toilet paper dispenser). Um, yeah, we're not going to lose sleep over those sorts of issues.

So all in all, we’d say Kimpton deserves a pat on the back. But as always, we’ll keep an eagle eye on the Lorien to see if they can maintain their running start.
