We’ll let you in on a little secret: A hotel review that describes a place as an “exclusive lair where guests live out their recluse fantasies” is pretty much guaranteed to perk our interest.

Well, folks, that’s what ForbesTraveler.com wrote about Cayo Espanto, a private island resort off the coast of Belize that’s officially — albeit apparently belatedly — on our radar. Cayo Espanto made ForbesTraveler.com's 2008 list of the world’s top 400 hotels and resorts (one of two Belize resorts to make the cut, we should mention).

Forbes raves about the “extreme intimacy,” saying “you may never see another guest.” That’s thanks to personal butlers (who you can reach via personal walkie-talkie) and accommodations in five 1,500- to 2,500-square-foot villas and one over-water bungalow, all of which you reach by way of a sandy patch that wends through a palm tree forest. Villas open up to 180-degree views of the Caribbean and include his-and-hers hammocks.

Over on TripAdvisor, most of the guest reviews are just as sparkling: "a dream honeymoon," "paradise found," etc — one guest even says, "The minute we stepped off the plane we were completely, 100%, pampered and taken care of. The island is gorgeous, and the views are breathtaking." But beware: dig a little bit deeper and the reviews become decidedly less positive, like this one, which warns of "stinging sea lice" in the surrounding waters. Yikes.
