SXSW Attendees Minus Hotel WiFi Equals Disaster at the Omni

By now, most of us are well aware of the major AT&T snafu that happened down in Austin at this year's South by Southwest. Basically, the cell service provider was not equipped to handle the massive amount of iPhones that convention-goers were packing — not to mention the heavy twittering, texting, and emailing they were probably doing. Yikes. Not good.

And almost as bad as a big ol' AT&T fail is a SXSW hotel in Austin with crappy WiFi. Sadly, this was the case at the the Omni Austin, where one blogger and SXSW attendee reports the WiFi was mostly down. Oh noes.

Doc Searls says:

Wi-fi at the OMNI is terrible. Once in awhile I’ll get a good wi-fi signal, but then it goes away. Sometimes the speeds are good (up to 5Mb up and down), then: nothing. I arrived last Friday night. When I told the front desk about it, they said they were aware of the problem, and were working on it. Meanwhile they woud try to find me a “wi-fi bridge”. Never used one of those.

May never, either, because they never got me one. “All of ours are loaned out,” they told me a few minutes ago. When I pressed the woman behind the counter for hope that the problem would be solved, she told me “we’ve taken it all the way up to the manager.” My message for that manager: this is unacceptable. For many customers, especially during shows like SXSW, Internet access is as essential as a working shower.

It's true. Denying bloggers their Internet connections is a dangerous game, Omni. Dangerous. They probably won't riot or anything, but they will certainly blog about it later.

On the bright side, he adds, "for what it’s worth, the OMNI is excellent most other respects. Very comfortable beds. Good shower. So, if you don’t care about the Internet, I recommend it." Oh, but we do care about the Internet.

    Don't hate on the Omni

In all fairness, the Wi-Fi sucked at ALL downtown hotels during SXSW. Not saying it's ok, by any means! I do agree that the downtown hotels need to get their act together and get their signals boosted, not just for SXSW but for all the time. SXSW is not the only big convention that rolls through.

I heard big time complaints about Courtyard Marriott Downtown and Hilton downtown.

Hilton at least tried to make their connection better, and I hear they're going to work even harder next year.

Courtyard knew there were lots of complaints last year and I don't think they did anything to make them better at all. I heard them called the "fail whale" during SXSW. ;)
