New York's iconic Plaza Hotel may be having serious issues after renovation, but that isn't phasing the equally historic Pierre Hotel at all as it preps for a June 1 grand reopening. Situated on the Upper East Side amongst diamond dealers and ritzy boutiques, The Pierre is out to attract only those who can still afford the best of the best despite the recession. To prove this, they are making no deals with their room rates; expect $816 for a classic room and $1,640 for a suite--and those are the "early bird" specials!

We're choking on our corn puffs over here, as one night in a one-bedroom suite at The Pierre could get you a whole month in an alright studio apartment in Manhattan, perhaps even with doorman! Do they think this will fly in a recession, with travel numbers down and hotel rates even more so? There are 140 regular rooms and 49 suites to fill at The Pierre, and plenty competition in the New York luxury hotel arena.

If they think the new restaurant, Le Caprice at The Pierre, or the 2 East lobby bar will sway the swank set into choosing them, then they've got a whole bucket of disappointment about to come down onto their heads.

For those re-opening rates, The Pierre better send guests home with more than just nice toiletries; we'll settle for the TV and iHome, thank you.

bonjour pierre!

welcome back! i would like to be the first to introduce you to our new friend--the recession.

The Pierre

while you say hello, a lotta Madoff investors and out-of-town-no longer wealthy tourists will be waving au revoir. i'm sure it will be beautiful, but beauty is skin, er, way to price deep, no?

abiento!

Welcome Back

Im glad to see a Grande Dame hotel reopening its doors and maintaining its rate integrity.  I really believe that this will truly set them up as an ultra-luxury hotel.  Too many hotels are dropping their rates drastically and compromising their reputation.

@twedrosm

Maintaining rate integrity?  When did they charge those kinds of prices prior to their renovation?  Ever?

My prediction is that the prices drop and the new rates are marketed as "deep discounts" -

Re: Welcome Back

It's not about comprimising a reputation, it's about paying the bills - rent and payroll ain't cheap and when occupancy is at the lowest ever in a nabe filled with luxury hotels it becomes tougher. Plaza, S-N, Mandarin, Ritz-Carlton, Trump are all within walking distance.

Are the rooms huge?

I wonder if these are giant apartment-like rooms or just regular New York sized rooms.... My favorite rooms in NY are the rooms ending in "11" at the Roger Smith - they're all bigger than most of my friend's apartments at around 800 sqft.
