After twelve days of luxury cruising around the Antarctic Peninsula, during which we had been pampered, petted, watered with champagne and force fed with exotic treats, we were ready for a reality check. After docking in Ushuaia, therefore, we booked ourselves into a simple, spartan hostel run by a religious charity, where guests were asked to pick herbs from the kitchen garden and stir them into the vast cauldron of broth from which lunch and dinner derived.

Just kidding, of course. We went to Los Cauquenes -- the best hotel in Ushuaia, and the southernmost 5-star lodging in the world.

This many-gabled, Alpine-style complex is a crackerjack of a hotel, combining faultless service -- we turned up a full six hours ahead of our designated check-in time and they didn't wag an eyebrow -- sophisticated facilities (including spa and gourmet restaurant), spacious guest rooms, a private beach, and the extraordinary views that come as standard in this part of the world.

Here's a little video as laughably bad as Los Cauquenes is seriously good. (Sorry for sneezing on the lens.)

The worst bit? A lukewarm apple martini. We may just have caught them at a bad moment, but the bar staff – though beautiful and friendly - doesn't seem to be fully primed in the dark arts of drink mixing.

The best bit? Breakfast. We could have eaten it all day. Easily the best breakfast we've had in Argentina (five-star properties in Buenos Aires, please take note.)

Room rates start at around $210USD per night.
