Is Bungalow 8 Across the Pond Worth a Visit?

Is London’s branch of Bungalow 8 losing its sheen? When it opened beneath the Sanderson Hotel St. Martin's Lane Hotel in September of 2007, it was supposed to be the nightclub to kill off all others. And it looked the part too, with every A-lister passing through on their trips to London.

But now it looks like it may be tailing off a bit. When we went last summer, it was full of what looked like hideously young children having a birthday party (we’re assuming that they must have been over 18, but they sure as hell didn’t look it), and the only celebs around were Peaches Geldof and fashion designer Matthew Williamson.

And last night, a friend of ours made it in there, and reckons it was full of “businessy-looking people." Not exactly the hub of cool that we’re led to believe. Lady Gaga went there last week, but apart from that it’s not the Kate Moss/Harvey Weinstein/Sienna Miller hothouse that it used to be.

According to another acquaintance who goes there regularly, it’s still hot, still pumped with fashion types and visiting Americans, and still working its atypical dress code (having fitted right in an Obama t-shirt and trainers on our visit, we can vouch for that one). But he does agree that it’s not as “big and flashy” as it once was.

Personally, the decor’s a bit psychedelic for us, with its go faster stripes making us feel a bit dizzy as we go down the stairs. But we’re guessing the true test will be how it fares at London Fashion Week, which starts February 20. We’ll keep you posted.
