Deskless at Smyth Tribeca

Well, it happened: we spent a night at Smyth Tribeca. As we announced on Monday, Thompson's newest several-times-delayed property opened up yesterday — and we got in there last night after we scored a kickass rate of $107 through Quikbook.

We'll have tons of pics, a video tour and a full rundown of our experience tomorrow, but allow us to set the tone: upon check-in, imagine our surprise when we set our computer bag down on top of...this. Which is not a desk. We had no desk!

There was no desk chair (or anything that could be moved from another part of the room to function as a desk chair); though there were outlets, a lamp and a phone — all things that normally indicate that a piece of furniture is meant to be a workstation. Baffling; this was more of a dresser. Even if we had ordered a chair delivered to our room, we wouldn't have been able to sit at this desk because there are, as you can see, drawers and cabinets sitting where our legs would have gone.

We'd taken a tour of the property a couple of weeks ago and we're absolutely certain we'd laid eyes upon desks (with desk chairs!) in all the rooms we saw that day — perhaps room 511 is a rare exception? Anyway, you get the idea; the ol' back is hurting from working from our bed, so we'll bring you more later.

    Deskless at Smyth Tribeca

What is it with these guys at Thompson.  It looks like the more properties they open, the less they "get it".  As if "normal" rooms at the Thompason LES aren't dysfunctional enough, they manage to open a property in the most business-oriented city in the US, and make it impossible to tend to business?  These guys need to learn that it's not enough to look trendy and hip; stuff has to work and be comfortable too.  Get a clue, Thompson!

really just want to use the word persnickety

We toured the hotel recently as well. When we were there they explained to us that only four rooms in the entire hotel do not have desks. These are the Junior Suite rooms, which, presumably forego the desk for the big couch/sitting area and larger bathrooms. Sounds like you ended up in one of these?

Anyway, we liked what we saw. The responses from our customers has be overwhelmingly positive too. In fact, we're just now putting together our annual Customers' Choice Awards (based on total bookings for 2008), and Thompson Hotels has the number one spot in LA, NY, and DC. Our customers are notoriously persnickety, so Thompson must be doing something right.
