Since this is the original property in the Mandarin Oriental chain and it just reopened in 2006 after extensive renovations, we just had to get all up in it.
The good news is that its restaurant, the Mandarin Grill, was redone by London's Terence Conran during that renovation, and has thus defies the decades with eternal class. Now for the bad news, and there is always bad news, but the Mandarin Oriental has Ferragamo and Chloe stores tucked into their back pocket.
They are completely unnecessary seeing as how all the luxury shopping you desire can be had on the same block, and that hotel space could be turned into a test kitchen or some other sort of new-fangled guest activity.
In any case, we're happy that there's at least one good old hotel in this city still retaining the classic image, just improved in comfort.
