The Five Best Hotels to Experience La Vie a Montreal

Where: Montreal, QC, Canada
February 3, 2009 at 4:14 PM | by Jenna | 2 Comments

When you were in college, Montreal was a veritable fantasy land for the adventurous 20-year-old American: a lowered drinking age, a different culture with no expensive flight required, a lowered drinking age, interesting people, and a lowered drinking age. Plus: lots of cheap hostels!

Now that you're a bit older and your priorities have changed, it's time to hit up Canada's cultural capital again — and this time around, you can afford to (and you probably want to) stay in a real hotel while you get the most out of what the city has to offer. Also, they say French is the language of love (don't they?) so why not take your honey there for Valentine's Day? Or, you know, just take yourself there for a vacay. After the jump, we've rounded up the Five Best Hotels to Experience La Vie a Montreal.

1. Sofitel Montreal
This chic high-rise is right in the middle of the Golden Square Mile, super-close to good shopping and tons of the city's cultural attractions. The decor inside is super modern, with floor-to-ceiling windows letting lots of natural light into the rooms. Rates around $217 CAD.

2. Fairmont The Queen Elizabeth
Try this for a bit of rich history: It was in suite 1742 of this hotel that John Lennon and Yoko Ono held their Bed-In for Peace from May 26 to June 2, 1969, during which Lennon also recorded the legendary "Give Peace a Chance." This year, you can mark the 40th anniversary of the occasion by booking the Imagine package from $199 per night (includes a commemorative CD, breakfast in bed for two and a copy of the lyrics of Give Peace a Chance valid until June 21, 2009) or from $599 in the actual John Lennon suite.

3. Place D'Armes
French a little shaky? The super-chic and historic Place D'Armes offers French lessons (seriously) for tourists willing to drop the cash: the French Learning Experience Package includes 18 hours of French lessons with a private tutor during a five-night stay, starting around $3,500 CAD for two. Rates around $233 CAD.

4. Opus Montreal
Opus came charging into the Montreal hotel scene in '07 and has been popular since; the rooms have a modern minimalist design, killer views (check out those windows) and they opened the glam new 9,000 SF dining spot Koko just last April. Rates around $305 CAD.

5. Hotel Gault
The people have spoken: Hotel Gault is the number two Montreal hotel on TripAdvisor, and we'd sum it up as a small design hotel with good service and no attitude. It's got 30 loft-style rooms with shiny concrete floors, massive freestanding tubs, and spacious minimalism throughout, and since it's on the Centre-Ville side of Old Montreal, Rue St-Paul & Rue St. Catherine are a (good weather) walk from the front door. Rates around $242 CAD.

    No Le St. James?

I agree with the Sofitel; it's modern without being obnoxious, and the bright colors are nice, especially when it's 12 degrees and snowing outside. But you left off Hotel Le St. James in Vieux Montreal. I stayed there back in February 2005, and I can easily say it's my favorite city hotel in North America. I had a superior room (lowest category) but it was still spacious, with vaulted ceilings, huge bathroom with separate tub and shower, and one of those nifty bedside panels that does everything except rub your feet. Definitely one to try next time!

    The St. Paul

Really, Sofitel? It looks the same as the sofitel in any other city Blah!

By far the best in Montreal is the St. Paul.

Vieux Montreal beaux arts building, ice fire in lobby. Awesome views. Cobblestone streets outside.
