You can't chew gum or smoke in Singapore, but apparently the Raffles The Plaza can smoothly switch over to become the Fairmont Singapore without so much as a peep. Not only has this iconic property traded hands, but Fairmont is claiming the 769-room hotel as the flagship for their brand.

Named as among the Top 500 Hotels in the World in 2008 by Travel + Leisure, the old Raffles went through a smooth transition to the new Fairmont as their brand is actually owned by Fairmont — how incestuous. The change has brought more than new stationery; room rates have dropped slightly from an average of $210 under Raffles to $180 as the Fairmont. For travelers headed to Asia in this economy, any little lower difference matters, and so we couldn't be happier with the rebrand.

Raffles in Singapore

I'm thinking you're getting the Singapore Sling Raffles confused with this one. This one might well be one the top 500 hotels in the world, but frankly that's not that exclusive. The real Raffles in Singapore is about $1,000 a night and quite spectacular.

Re: Raffles in Singapore

Thanks for the comment! You're right that the real Raffles in Singapore is spectacular; that Raffles International remains untouched. It's Raffles The Plaza which switched over, another (cheaper and less spectacular) one.

lol

was totally speechless there for a minute... thank god it's not "the sling raffles" gosh

Not the 'iconic' Raffles

Yes, the author of this post should remove 'iconic' from the description as this is definitely not the iconic colonial-era Raffles that has become a Fairmont. The Plaza was hardly 'iconic'.

bs

"iconic" "renowned" "legendary" "signature" these are fake press release words, not real language. best to avoid altogether.
