'Adopt-A-Farmer' Program Crops Up at Loews Hotels

February 26, 2009 at 1:56 PM | by KatieK | 0 Comments

It’s easy to gloss over green initiatives touted by hotel restaurants. Locally sourced this, organic that — we’ve seen it all and, quite frankly, we need a little more to be impressed these days. Even so, Loews Hotels have managed to pique our attention with their new sustainable “Adopt-A-Farmer” program.

Claiming to be one of the first companies in the hospitality industry to issue a “brand-wide mandate to support and enhance local farming communities,” the hotel chain has established official food partnerships with area farmers, fishermen, and indie purveyors.

For example, San Diego’s Loews Coronado Bay Resort partners with 12 local farming communities and cooks with 60 seasonal herbs and veggies plucked from its on-site organic garden. And at Loews Miami Beach Hotel, fruits and veggies are grown nearby at Paradise Farms in Homestead, Florida, while farm-raised Everglades striped bass comes from local purveyor Triar Seafood.

The new program means menus at Loews Hotels will have an emphasis on seasonal and regional cuisine, based on their adopted farmers’ current crops. Plus, guests can choose from rotating selections called “From the Garden,” which will feature local, farm-fresh ingredients.
