Is it Time to Start Booking Rooms for the Vancouver Olympics?
Ohmigosh people: there's only another 352 days to book your hotel stay for the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics! We're totally kidding; don't freak out yet along with the local Vancouver press. Although technically you should get your Olympic itinerary sorted out as early as possible, we think the National Post is just trying to fake us out by quoting some area hotels' rocketing room rates a year in advance: "Potential Olympic visitors searching for the best online hotel deals might be shocked at the prices quoted at the Executive Inn Express in suburban Richmond. Rooms currently available for $61 to $160 a night will cost $550 to $795 a night during the Games."
Have we not learned anything after the Beijing hotel debacle? With this recession, more Olympics travelers are going to opt for hosting chips-and-dip parties in front of their TV screens, rather than cheering rink-side while Apolo Anton Ono brings home the gold. After all, you could be really industrious and frugal by visiting Vancouver now and taking advantage of those $61 nightly rates for a long weekend, with the ultimate goal of meeting and making some friends in the city with whom you could crash during the Olympics. If you an introvert who prefers to dole out $900 for a night at a Comfort Inn, then go right ahead, but just don't say we didn't warn you.
