VALPARAISO
Hotel Latitud Sur
If Ikea had a boutique hotel in Valpo, this would be it. One of the newest spots to land in this artsy district of Cerro Alegre, 30 Degrees is hidden in an alley, which may not seem like the safest place to stumble back to after a long night of partying. Luckily, the area is pretty safe with someone at the lobby 24/7. It has that trendy vibe but is intimate and ultimately cheap- and by intimate we mean pretty tight quarters. What we liked? Wireless Internet (thank god!) and the cute little café at the front where you can grab some morning munchies and a cup of coffee to start your day.
Hotel Zero
We felt right at home with this sophisticated yet chill vibe of Hotel Zero- literally it’s a restored 19th century house on a hill. Rooms are the perfect blend of old charm (wood floors, high ceilings and grand windows) mixed with a contemporary flair (the décor is warm yet stylish). Room start at 150/night with some of the better one’s giving you an incredible view of the city and the harbor. Perks? A Winter Garden where you can watch the sunset and rise. We also love the idea of their honesty bar open 24/7- you serve yourself and they trust that you will pay.
Hotel Casa Higueras
One of the first boutique hotels to open in this area, it’s also the most expensive. Located along a cobblestone street deemed a World Heritage Site by Unesco, Casa Higueras is a converted 20-bedroom mansion. Rooms starting at 200/night, are less modern and more sophisticated, with a Mediterranean villa vibe. Perks? Pool, lounge area, plus their very own upscale restaurant, Montealegre.
PATAGONIA
Patagonia Camp
We were a bit worried about this one. When we hear the word "camp" and "overnighter" in one sentence, our minds rewind to sleeping bags, tents and bathroom breaks in the forest when we were twelve. Thankfully, this camp was more evolved and luxurious to say the least.
Each room is it’s own independent tent dome/yurt, which sits in the middle of the forest and looks out onto an amazing view of Lake Toro and the Paine Masse. The surroundings were so calming and awe-inspiring that us journalists even joked about Camp Patagonia becoming a retreat to write that epic novel none of us will ever write.
We also loved the intimate dining/lounge area where we were indulged by the friendly staff who served us cocktails while we cruised the internet on their free wi-fi. The camp offers all-inclusive 3-4 night stays including lodging, food and excursions ranging from 300-400 dollars/night.
PUERTO NATALES
Hotel Remota
remotahotel.com
158 Miles from Punta Arenas lies the ocean-side town of Puerto Natales. Ther you will find Remota (video above), a hip hotel with 72 rooms and a great view of the Ultima Esperanza Bay, the Balmaceda Glacier and Paine Mountain Range.
Designed by famed Santiago-based architect, Germán del Sol, the hotel is a work of art in itself with a harsh black exterior complimented with entire grass roofs helping it blend into nature -- moisture farm style.
Inside, Remota has this cool, modern-yet-warm feel complete with a native indoor fire pit and local folk art hanging from the walls. There is also an adjacent building with a pool, massage room, and outdoor jacuzzi, plus a 4-star restaurant where you can wine and dine the night away. Pricing starts at $1000 per person for a three-night stay. Plus, to make your escape that much more extreme, the hotel doesn’t even have TV’s in the rooms.
