How Important is Free Hotel Parking to You?

February 24, 2009 at 1:42 PM | by Jenna | 9 Comments

Exhibit A: This morning, we hit up TripAdvisor to check on guest reactions to the newly-opened Smyth Tribeca. There were two reviews smiling back at us — positive experiences, generally; good service, great rates, etc. — and then there was this:

We were able to get a sweet deal at $179 a night. We only had two slight gripes. There was only one robe in the large closet and we got spanked on the overnight parking at $75!

Exhibit B: On Friday, the Johnson family (pictured above) checked in to the Doubletree Hotel Philadelphia and were greeted with great fanfare and fun: they had redeemed the 100,000th "Philly Overnight" Hotel Package since 2001, making the Philly Overnight Hotel Package the most successful hotel package in Philadelphia history. Guess what the Philly Overnight Package offers? No big rate kickbacks — just free parking. Oh, and a welcome amenity.

Question: is free parking one of the most important factors you consider when booking your hotel these days?

As Exhibit A demonstrates, parking can get seriously expensive. 30% of that Smyth guest's total charges went to parking alone — yuck. We cannot say enough to emphasize the importance of calling ahead to check on the parking situation before you book your room anywhere, especially in a big city — more often than not, hotels won't post the nightly parking rate on their website, so do your homework (Smyth's site certainly says nothing about the parking sitch — but then again, cheap parking in NYC is a pipe dream no matter where you go).

And as Exhibit B shows, that Philly Overnight package — which a pretty solid number of hotels in the Philly area have been offering together for several years now — doesn't really include anything significant except that free pass on hotel parking. And it's the best-selling Philly package ever.

Yes, we know: Hotel parking has always been expensive; none of this is news. But in this economy, with so many hotels struggling to fill rooms, might free parking be one of the most important incentives properties can offer guests to entice them to book?

    Free Hotel Parking

We (Philly Tourism) value the free hotel parking for the Philly Overnight Hotel Package up to $75 -- a great benefit.

    Pretty Important

You're right, the hotels never disclose it--and then you get there and it's $66 a night to valet or $65 a night to self-park.

I stayed at a Hyatt near Anaheim, and parked across the street at the Courtyard since parking there was free.  It was just a uncovered parking lot in the suburbs--not NYC--no need to rip me off.

    parking

if only most people DID bother to do their research before booking rooms. the last hotel i worked at charged $27 a night to park and i don't know how many times i heard at check-in "you want me to pay how much?"

do they list parking rates on hotel websites?

if so where? because i only usually find out when i get there. and i'm not quite sure a hotel that charges $27 and up for hotel parking would even display that rate prominently on their websites for guests to see. parking rates are always a hotel's dirty shame.

    hotel rates

they might not list the rates because sometimes the parking lot is actually not owned/operated by the hotel.

    Free Parking Deal

I got complimentary parking at the Georgian in Santa Monica and a 10% discount off of the rate by booking with Magellan Vacations. It was a pretty sweet deal.

Bryant Park Hotel now has free parking on weekends

The Bryant Park Hotel in New York - Midtown Manhattan, just announced Complimentary Valet Parking for all hotel guests on Friday and Saturday night.

I don't know of any other hotels in Manhattan offering free parking unless the guest pays for a special parking package.

    free parking is a must

Defiantly, free parking is a must.  These charges ridiculous and so are resort fees. Gaylord Hotels have a mandatory resort fee of $10-$15 per night which gives you access to the free wifi, and use of their fitness room and pool.   Something that should be included in the price of the room.
This recession is going to change a lot of peoples habits permanently and these people won't be splashing their money like they did in the past. Big corporations have have slashed their per-diem s big time, already.
No longer will a lot of business travelers be able to goto an Intercontinental hotel and get Rack Plus, unless they are paying the difference.

    Free parking is great!

When I visit my grampa at different retirement homes, I love the places with free parking.
