Surprise, Surprise: London On The Cheap Is A Success

Who’d have thought it? Looks like offering hotel rooms for a ridiculously low amount of money gets people through the doors. The Hoxton, which sold off 500 of its rooms for just £1 ($1.50) last month, saw them go in just seven minutes. Even the relatively expensive next tier up, where another 500 rooms went for £29 ($40) in the same sale), sold out within 13 minutes.

According to the hotel, there were 60,000 people gunning for those 1,000 rooms. Including us – we were on an ill-timed coffee break when the sale started, checked in on it five minutes down, and saw a precious £1 room disappear as we were typing in our pesky credit card details.

We’re not too bothered about losing out though because there’ll be more where that came from. For a start, the £1 sales are a regular fixture at The Hoxton – they take place every quarter.

For another, plenty more hotels are getting in on the act. Umi, which owns a hotel in London’s Notting Hill, as well as a plum location on the seafront in Brighton, ran a similar promotion in January, offering one room a day at each hotel for just £1. And they followed it with another promotion giving away one room every day for €9.99, or $13.

According to owner Steve Lowry:

Our offer is not just a gimmick. In the current economic climate, hotels and others involved in the hospitality industry need to do everything in their power to continue making the UK an attractive destination.

Of course, one room a night isn’t hugely helpful, but at least it’s a start. And you don’t have to be a psychic to predict there’ll only be more of these offers as we get deeper into recession. Keep ‘em coming, please.

Some of the best things in London are still free.

Staying at the Hoxton, going to the free museums and entertainment...how could life get any sweeter?

£1 Per Room Where Was I?

I will be looking out for these rooms every day from now on. £1 per room at hotels in Brighton, London and many more the US. Now you wont beat that, or they would need to give them away for nothing.
