We know it’s unflattering to be too smug, but we could have saved the New York Times the hassle of retreating to Brooklyn — if only they had read our coverage of the outer borough’s Nu Hotel.

But alas, such was not the case, and this past weekend the NYT checked in to the downtown Brooklyn boutique hotel, which you might remember opened last August. The experience produced obvious results (well, obvious if you’ve been eyeing the place as closely as we have been): bright, modern rooms; cork floors and hammocks (in three of the rooms); views of the Brooklyn House of Detention across the street; a fantastic location but noisy traffic from Atlantic Avenue.

Yet, the review did garner a couple of details worth sharing here, like the “rudimentary, windowless gym in the basement.” Plus, the continental breakfast earned a resounding “meh”—according to the writer, you’d be wise to grab breakfast across the street to the New St. Clair Restaurant. As well as cork floors, the Nu has recycled teak furniture, organic cotton sheets, and biodegradable key cards. And, random: The bathroom features a blackboard wall (equipped with chalk) behind the toilet.

All in all, the Nu Hotel still gets a mixed bag that leans towards positive. Just be sure to ask for a room facing the back of the hotel. According to the NYT, rates now start at $169. Not bad at all.
