Hopefully Not Sleepless in Seattle

February 19, 2009 at 4:37 PM | by juliana | 14 Comments

We're heading to Seattle next month for our very first trip to the grunge mecca. What? It's not 1993 anymore? Darn. Either way, we're pretty stoked to visit Seattle but we have no idea where we want to stay.

Since our budget is tight we are trying to keep the stay under $150 a night. We'd really like to do it for $100. Our best hope for that is to leave our hotel fate up to the Priceline or Hotwire blind booking gods. But we're not that desperate yet.

A cursory search on our hotel rates search engine gave us the Westin Seattle for $135 a night. This is $14 less than the Sheraton which makes us wonder about the quality of the hotel. Aren't Westins superior to Sheratons?

We've also had some good luck recently with the Marriott Renaissance brand and their Seattle location is available for $143 a night. The boutique Sorrento Hotel is going for a good rate of $135 a night. The W Seattle is $154 and the Fairmont is $209 which is very good for a luxury hotel.

Still, it's times like these when we wish Thompson Hotels or Ace Hotels were opening a hotel here for around $100 a night. Anyone with Seattle suggestion, let us know.

So glad you are coming to Washington!

Yay, I was so pleased to see that you are coming to Washington next month - full disclosure: I am the PR manager for Washington State Tourism.

I know you already know the Kimptons, so AAA gets you a rate of $156 at Hotel Monaco (plus, your resident goldfish).  Hotel 1000 is very luxe, but not below $150 at the moment.  You might also check out the Inn at the Market - hit them at the right time and you'll get a great deal.

    Sheraton is Newer

Westin usually is superior but this Westin was one of the first properties where as the Sheraton is a Newer Build.  Be sure to stay in the newer tower there if you do go.  The Sheraton is also a great location.

PS>  The Fairmont used to be a Four Seasons.

    Renaissance

I've stayed at the Renaissance Seattle (averaging around $150) and it's really nice (Renaissance's can be hit or miss).

    Ace Hotel

You do realize the Ace here in Seattle is the original, right ;-)?

A friend who's in town right now got a room at the Alexis for $115.  I think they found it on kayak.com

    Hotel Max

Seattle's Hotel Max is offering $99 on weekends, $119 Mon -  Thur, and includes free valet parking and free wi-fi, so they are adding $42 in value per night, in a town that can nickel and dime you big time in parking and internet.  Stylish and a good location a block from Pacific Place, just by the W and Sheraton.

    Westin's indie cred...

I haven't stayed at the westin since '95 (and remember it being kinda tired then), but it does appear on the cover of Modest Mouse's The Lonesome Crowded West http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Westin_Seattle

seattle = my hometown.  seriously?  i live and die by the hotel industry here.  no joke.

um...first?  westin started here.  like, the westin seattle is the first westin.  ever.  old and tired as it may be, it still has best views in town.  despite their shout our in the anti-view thread.  what up?

given the love that hotelchatter has for the ultra luxe and high design, you gotta peep out Hotel 1000, Alexis, and The Edgewater.  as they play the high-rate game, though, if you are looking for luxe on a budget, don't forget about our friends at the Pan Pacific or the Inn at El Gaucho.

    The List

I stayed at the Hotel Monaco, the Westin, Sheraton and W years ago before moving to Seattle. They are all pretty much what you would expect them to be and might even be a little dated by now (unless they were updated recently) especially the Westin which might be the oldest one. I'd recommend a Seattle original instead such as:

    • Ace Hotel (you know this one)
    • Hotel Max
    • Hotel Andra, bonus: Tom Douglas restaurant inside (Lola) and others near-by too! Good location.
    • Hotel 1000
    • Inn At The Market (great Pike Place Market location)

You will find the best deals at the Ace or Hotel Max, but you might want to upgrade to Hotel Andra or 1000. The Inn is more traditional, but such a great location if you like being at the Pike Place market a stone throw away from dozens of amazing dining options (that's another post)...

    Inn at the Market

I agree that Inn at the Market would be excellent, it is a great property, but if they are trying to keep the price close to $100, there's just no way.  But it is a super property, and a good atmosphere.  I've also always had good experiences at the Warwick, and its location has been beneficial for me in the past, I've had good staff experiences there, and while not as 'stylish' as some others, it's usually been a good property.  The pirce might be right for them this go-round, right around $100 standard, but they charge for internet and parking, add about $37 per day.  Andra's a fine property, but start $70 more than Max or Warwick before the nickel and dime stuff.
