Since this week is American Heart Month, we here at HotelChatter are profiling Fitness Hotels--hotels that make it feasible for you to keep up with your fitness regime, or start a new one, while you are on the road or on vacation. Know of any fitness hotels to spotlight? Get physical with our tipline.

When we think of the Mayan Riviera in Mexico, we definitely don’t think of fitness (unless you count those ill-advised work-outs for your liver). Yep, say what you will, but we can’t help but think SPRING BREAK!! And not in a good way.

So while we were initially a bit skeptical of a hotel in the region touting its fitness program, we’ll have to admit Hotel Escencia did a nice job convincing us. First off, Esencia is a whole 46 miles from Cancun, making us fairly confident that it’s beyond the scope of wet t-shirt contests and beer pong. Plus, the hotel is located on a 50-acre private estate that was built originally for an Italian duchess. In other words, the place has good reason to think it’s too good for a standard hotel fitness room.

Indeed, Esencia is all about the in-room fitness amenities. So when you ring room service for those chocolate-covered strawberries, you can ask for a portable gym as well (free weights, exercise balls, Bosu balance balls, resistance bands, et al). The hotel’s fitness concierge is on hand to help you get set up and offer instructions and training tips.

Guests can also request for the equipment to be delivered to the beachside yoga pavilion (or anywhere else on-site). You know, so you can have a little Caribbean breeze with your workout. Or, guests can order a Wii Fit game console, so they can stay fit from the privacy of their room.

Esencia also offers free yoga and meditation classes daily as well as the organic Aroma Spa, which harvests its own herb garden for treatments and has five treatment rooms, four Jacuzzis, two Mayan-style domed steam rooms, and a beachside Temazcal Mayan Sauna.

Rates start at $325 a night.
