NYT Learns The Jane Will Be 'Like a Mansion in Decline'
Confirming a whole bunch of stuff that we reported on last summer (like the "Darjeeling Limited" look), New York Times checks in on the controversial Jane Hotel (winter promo rates now $75!) and its cinematic design influence.
Talking with hotelier Sean MacPherson about how he edits out the ordinary qualities of life in order to develop his hotel spaces into something "... slightly bigger and more storied than its guests and owners," The Times relays that The Jane is an amalgamation of nods to Wes Anderson films like Darjeeling and "The Royal Tenenbaums." When the public spaces are completed, the article continues, they will have a feel "more like a mansion in decline than a hotel."
Perhaps the most pronounced cinematic atmosphere comes with MacPherson's Bowery Hotel, which has gone the creepy way of invoking "A Clockwork Orange" and "The Shining," and yet it remains one of the hottest hotels in New York for splurging on a stay. Even the upcoming Mondrian SoHo is jumping on the bandwagon by channeling "La Belle et la Bete." So are hotels which look and feel like hotels out of style now? If it means that we can assume a cooler identify for ourselves while staying in such dramatic digs, then we're absolutely down for it.
