What's the Deal With Room Mate Hotels?

Room Mate Leo, Granada

Room Mate Hotels first caught our attention when Andre Balazs sold the Hotel QT to the Spanish chain and Times Square's pool-in-the-lobby hotel transformed fairly quietly into Room Mate Grace. Today, Budget Travel mentions the Spanish brand on a list of some of Spain's chicest hotel chains, and we just found a deal on Quikbook promising $119 rooms (if you stay 3+ nights) at NYC's Room Mate Grace.

Still, we didn't know too much about the chain's concept — or, for that matter, exactly why all the Room Mate hotels had person-names attached to them. So we put on our investigatin' pants and got in touch with Enrique “Kike” Sarasola, President and CEO of Room Mate Hotels — and (fun fact!) a former Olympic horseback rider.

Kike started the chain in Spain after realizing that most guests don't spend time in their hotel doing much besides sleeping, showering, or eating breakfast when they're there to see the city. With that in mind, the key priorities for every Room Mate hotel, he says, are 1) to make sure that all properties are in prime locations and 2) that the beds, showers and free breakfasts are excellent and consistent across the entire chain.

Not consistent across the chain, however, are the personalities of the hotels: each Room Mate hotel is designed differently, with a funky, modern feel that reflects its location. The names of the hotels — like Mario, Leo, Laura and Oscar — are supposed to emphasize each hotel's distinctly different personality.

More importantly, the names function in harmony with the Room Mate philosophy, which "invites guests to feel as though they have an 'in-the-know' friend in every city who has a comfortable and beautiful place to stay, knowledge of all the best cultural and nightlife events, and a no-frills attitude." Mario, Leo, Laura and Oscar are your friends.

When we asked what types of guests his hotels generally appeal to, Kike said, "we look for anyone who wants to take care of their money. We're a fun, friendly affordable and sexy chain." As far as that "fun" part goes, the evidence is right here in NYC: Room Mate Grace still has that pool in the lobby, and the nightlife scene is pretty bumpin'. Guests and non-guests can have drinks dry at the lobby bar or wet from the swim-up bar on any night, no matter what the weather.

With fourteen hotels already open worldwide and four more in the works — Buenos Aires, Mexico City, Madrid, and Barcelona are on the way in '09 — the chain is growing internationally quickly. And Americans can expect two new "in-the-know" friends to pop up soon: the company has its sights set on a Room Mate in South Beach and another NYC property ("New York already has a girl, so this one has to be male," Kike says) in the future.

    hotels in Hyderabad

Hotels in Hyderabad have hiked up security measures to cut down on the risks of terror attacks but somehow they have come in the way of the warm hospitality of the five stars.

Not Opening is NEW grand opening.

There is a disturbing trend popping up in the hotel world and it's about time we call it out. Chalk it up to the "crisis" or micromanaging but for the second time this month a hotel in Barcelona (I'm looking at you W) has opened but not really opened.
The EMMA hotel is fully functional except one would not know it by checking the website. The official word is that the hotel will not open OPEN for another month but guests are welcome to check in anytime they want (but they can never leave). The EMMA hotel joins the impressive line up hotels that can be booked on online but have not officially opened according to the hotel management. Which is quite disturbing when trying to get the scoop on what is going on. Upon asking the sharply dressed male models at the front desk, one is directed to call a ROOMATE hotline where tours of the hotel can be scheduled. You heard it here first- not openeing is the new opening...
