As we wait for The Chatwal New York to open next spring, we thought we’d sink into some of the details about the most important part of a hotel: the bed. The Chatwal claims that it will be “serious about sleep, in a city that never does.”

Chuckles aside, we like what we’re hearing. Especially on a miserable, rainy day like the one in NYC today, when all we want to do is hide under the covers. At The Chatwal those covers will create “a chic residential look” and come from a number of fancy sources:

Cristina Azario: A former Frette creative, Azario now makes lush duvets and bedding under her own name. For The Chatwal, she’s come up with a custom coverlet in a heavy, ivory sateen with beige banding, decorative pillows, and a cashmere-wool blend throw to complement the hotel’s “Deco-Chic” design. Chatwal GM Joel Freyberg calls this throw “the most luxurious and comforting amenity that one can offer in a guestroom.”

Shifman Mattress Company: Apparently the preferred mattress of the Clinton and Kennedy administrations in the White House, they’ve designed a bespoke, hand-tufted mattress for The Chatwal. Shifman mattresses can cost anywhere from $3,500 to $21,000 each, and take up to 8 hours to build.

Frette: The gold standard of hotel bedding, Frette has designed a special line for The Chatwal that includes 400-thread-count duvet covers, Egyptian cotton top sheets and pillow shams, and for the bathroom, 650-thread-count towels, wash cloths, and bath mats. (Freyberg uses Frette at home, if you care to know, and wanted his guests to have the same.)

SFERRA: Because with hotel air-conditioning on high, you can never have enough snuggle material. Chatwal rooms will include a chocolate and ivory St. Moritz blanket from SFERRA tucked into the Malletier-inspired closets. They’re made from combed cotton but are said to feel velvety. Freyberg recommends pairing your blanket with a movie from the hotel’s library and a cup of Earl Grey. They cost around $250 retail.

Down Etc: Freyberg says he conducted sleep-trials to choose comforters and pillows, finally settling on a Down Etc all-white goose down comforter that adjusts to body temperature, as well as goose-down and feather pillows. There are also hypoallergenic AquaPlush pillows for guests not down with geese. Of course, these options are all part of The Pillow Butler menu.

Zzzzz ...
