Which Hotel Brand Should Take Over the Old Ramada at JFK?

We try to avoid airport hotels if they involve the words “New York,” so we must thank a tipster for bringing this bit of airport-hotel news to our attention. It appears that the punching bag, possibly one of the grossest airport hotels in the world, that was the Ramada Plaza Hotel at JFK has now closed. Indeed, over at the property’s website there is a farewell note from the staff and management—but no news on what’s next for the space.

While we’d like to daydream that airlines might send us into a decent Manhattan hotel if our flights are canceled, we’re not that optimistic. We think our best bet is for one of the hip but affordable hotel brands to take over the old Ramada, and make it not only stay-able but a viable option for a JFK layover or mega-delay.

There’s plenty of space to work with, including a restaurant and lounge, a gym, business center, and 13,000 square feet of conference space. There’s even room for RV parking! So which hotel conglomerate is going to snap this baby up?

We’d like to think it will become an Aloft, one of the nicer, newer Best Westerns, or even a Hotel Indigo. Perhaps these ‘diffusion’ lines are too clean and pretty for the bleak surrounds of JFK, but this is New York, and if Jet Blue can re-introduce some prettiness to Terminal 5, then hopefully the old Ramada can come back to life with an extreme makeover as well.

What would you like to see the Ramada become? Let us know in the comments below.

I KNOW I KNOW

Ideally? Yotel. But I'd also settle for an EasyHotel...or how cool would it be to have the first US branch of Tune Hotels here? I guess what I'm saying is...affordable. We already have a gazillion business traveler and beige chain hotels there.

wow i never thought of that

a european budget brand would be awesome here. now, who has the cash to invest in this property? i'm thinking it needs to be demolished. those rooms look frightening on the TripAdvisor hotel pictures.

Highgate

I think the hotel is partially owned (if not fully owned) by Highgate.  If anyone has money, its them.
