Checking the Pulse of Andaz 5th Ave: Will It Open by Spring 2010?

UPDATE: Oh, boo! We just learned from the hotel's rep that Andaz Fifth Ave will no longer have the resin doors or the wine store. We still expect to be wowed by the design, however, and are holding out for a surprise we like just as much as those spinning closets down at Andaz Wall St.
Now we’ve had a sneak peek at Andaz Wall Street, opening in January, we’re all excited for the second Andaz property in New York City: Andaz Fifth Avenue. But when will it open? That, friends, is the million-dollar question. We’ve heard that it won’t throw open its doors until June 2010, but the hotel’s rep and website both say “Spring 2010.” Will summer come early or will spring come late?
As we wait (kind of) patiently, we can’t help but wonder what goodies designer Tony Chi has come up with for the Bryant Park-area property. In keeping with the Andaz concept, there will be local influences. Will they come from the New York Public Library across the street (ooh, perfect opportunity for the Andaz Reader in Residence!), from Grand Central Terminal down the block, or maybe from the Fashion Week shows that used to grace the Bryant Park tents? (They’re moving to Lincoln Center in September 2010.)
So far all we know is there will be Factory-style sash windows, black washed walls, tea-stained resin doors, and natural woods. There’ll be an outdoor courtyard, a cellar bar and wine store, and a restaurant with pivoting shutters and (like Andaz Wall Street) a chef’s table with a bird’s eye view of all the action in the kitchen.
Chi has designed many a hotel, some for Park Hyatt, Intercontinental, and Mandarin Oriental, and we certainly expect something special from him here. After all, his design philosophy is all about “constructing the heart of a body.” According to his website, “he directs blood flow and gives each of his spaces its own unique pulse.”
We’re not sure if that means we should bring a stethoscope with us when we check in next year, but at any rate, anyone with more info on when Andaz Fifth Avenue might come to life—please let us know in the comments below!
