Worst Hotel Hype: Edition Hotels

December 30, 2009 at 10:38 AM | by HotelChatter | 0 Comments

It's what you've been waiting all year for--The 2009 HotelChatter Awards! We'll be bringing you the best and worst of the year (and the decade) all day today and part of tomorrow. Agree or disagree with our picks? Air your thoughts in comments below.

WORST HOTEL HYPE: EDITION HOTELS

Yes, we know that hotel opening dates get delayed and pushed back for reasons beyond the hotel's control. Sometimes it has to do with the shipment of construction materials, sometimes it has to do with design issues, sometimes it has to do with Colombian guerillas that fancy precious marble but more often than not it has to do with money, loans and financing. And in 2009, we saw a LOT of hotel delays. It's a little painful to wade through them all.

But as far as Worst Hotel Hype, that award is going to have to go to Edition Hotels (above), the partnership between superstar hoteliers Bill Marriott and Ian Schrager. Nearly two years ago, our worlds were rocked in a good way by the announcement of the partnership between the Marriott and Schrager but yet, there's nothing on the horizon for this new luxury design brand.

Locations were announced for Miami, Chicago, DC, Scottsdale and even Hawaii and all were cancelled. The plans for the Edition Bangkok seem to still be on but that opening date is not happening until 2012. In the meantime, we're still waiting to hear more about Marriott's new Autograph Collection of existing independent hotels.

Still we're looking at 2010 as a glass already half-full. While we don't expect an actual Edition Hotel to open, we do believe we could see at least one location come to life. Pretty please Bill and Ian, with a cherry on top?

Runner-Ups
1. The Sanctuary: This hotel is technically open as the Portland Square Hotel in Times Square but the plans to turn it into a boutique hotel called The Sanctuary have been in the works for three years. This year, they unveiled nine remodeled rooms as part of a "dress rehearsal" but we just want the whole thing to be done already. Date is still TBD.

2. The Chatwal: Just.taking.forever. Newest opening date is next Spring. At least the beds will be comfy.

3. W New York Downtown: We've been waiting on W NYD for nearly three years. The newest opening date is now February 4, 2010. Fingers crossed

4. Fontainebleau Las Vegas: Essentially, this hotel ran out of funding and it now stands as an empty shell, an eyesore on the North end of the strip near Wynn and Encore. The joke around town is now that it might be the first hotel in Vegas to be imploded before it even opens.
