The Gansevoort and The Gramercy Park Hotel Get New Restaurants

We know it seems impossible this soon after the holidays, but we’re hungry. And we only have three more days of seasonal gluttony before the New Year good behavior begins. Perfect timing, in other words, to see how two of New York’s newest hotel restaurants—the Gramercy Park Hotel’s Maialino and Tanuki Tavern at the Hotel Gansevoort—are faring.
Both spots come from big-shot restaurateurs with loads of experience in creating New York hotspots. The New York Times calls China Grill Management’s Jeffrey Chodorow a “bewhiskered seducer of the restaurant world.” And so far, his Japanese tapas joint in the Gansevoort is proving to be quite the Casanova. (Tanuki Tavern replaces his former Japanese restaurant in the same space, Ono).
Nick Lachey, Brooklyn Decker, and Kellan Lutz have all been spotted at Tanuki, which the NYT calls “young and exciting” with “respectable, perfectly good quasi-Asian fare.” Let’s face it: you can get good sushi all over New York, so this is an all-about-being-seen scene, something Chodorow excels at.
Think pretty pink wallpaper, Japanese wooden shelves, and paper lanterns. Or, as Nylon magazine put it, “The Pub Most Likely to Become a Fashion Line.”
Across town at the GPH, Danny Meyer hoped to make people forget about the failed Wakiya restaurant by replacing it with Maialino, which means “little pig.” And what do you know, his plan is working.
Anna Wintour, Gourmet magazine’s Ruth Reichl, and, uh, Lars Ulrich from Metallica, have all been spotted at the trattoria-style space, and as Eater NY reported, it was hard not to find a reviewer, Yelper, or blogger who didn’t rave about the joint and its classic Roman dishes.
With its pasta and comfort-food-heavy menu, Maialino sounds like the perfect place to celebrate the last few days of 2009, and while not cheap, it's much more reasonably priced than the hotel housing it.
There is a bar menu for snacks and wine, and a breakfast and brunch menu was just introduced last week. Otherwise, it’s just dinner for now—lunch will be rolled out in January.
Have you eaten at Tanuki Tavern, Maialino, or another new hotel restaurant lately? Tell us what you ate, and don’t skimp on the details. We need our fix of food porn!
