Five 'Clean and Nice' Airport Hotels in Case a Storm Strikes Again

December 22, 2009 at 4:49 PM | by | Comment (1)

Last weekend was a doozy for some travelers looking to head home for the holidays. Nearly a foot of snow was dumped on the East Coast and airports were shuttered as they tried to dig out from under the snow pile.

Most passengers spent the night in the airport while some shuttled back to their own houses or shacked up with friends. Others were forced to spend the night at an airport hotel.

Usually, not a lot of thought goes into airport hotels. The demand is always going to be there so why put effort into making the hotel comfortable or in some cases, clean. But thankfully, some better options near the terminals have popped up.

Now, we sincerely hope that another storm doesn't strike and leave you stranded but if it does, at least you will have this list of hotels to consider. We also realize we should have copped together this list before the Blizzard of Late '09. Sorry!

Five Best Airport Hotels in Case a Storm Strikes Again

Marriot Miaimi Airport: This isn't your typical airport Marriot. The hotel recently received a $15 million renovation and much of that has gone into prettying up the communal areas in the lobby, so you can gripe about travel delays with fellow passengers and maybe make new friends, instead of hibernating in your room. There's also free WiFi, a Starbucks and two restaurants--The Cane Fire Grill and the Champions Sports bar.
Rates start at $129 a night this week.
Location from MIA: One mile south.

Aloft Denver: We're not over the moon about the Aloft brand but a HotelChatter reader dropped in his review of the place saying he liked Westin-quality mattress, the flat-screen TV and the walk-in shower. Plus, rates were less than the neighboring chains, the breakfast is free as is the WiFi and the hotel has a 24-hour shuttle that will pick you up and drop you off at the airport.
Rates start at $69 a night this week.
Location from DIA: 10 miles

The Custom Hotel Los Angeles: The Radisson might be right next to LAX but that place is scary. We suggest riding up the road a few miles to the boutique Custom Hotel on the edge of Marina del Rey. The digs are funky chic (the exterior is painted black and the hotel has dog pillows) but don't worry, there's still free WiFi in the rooms.
Room rates start at $89 a night this week.
Location from LAX: Three miles

Hyatt Regency O'Hare: This hotel just got a whopping $64 million renovation last year and the rooms feature flat-screen TV, ergonomically designed workstations and fluffy Hyatt beds. But if you're worried about your flight status, you can monitor it from the hotel's Red Lounge and Bar which has "FliteBoards" on the wall. Shuttle buses run every 15 minutes too.
Rates start at $99 a night this week.
Location from OHD: 3.25 miles.

The Allegria Hotel: Is it just us or does every hotel by JFK scare the living daylights out of you? Most people would probably rather stay somewhere in the city than the neighboring airport hotels but that's a long haul (not to mention an expensive cab ride.) The Allegria Hotel is a new hotel in Long Beach, about 20 minutes from JFK and right on the ocean. Reviews are still spotty, mostly about the restaurant, but we'd be willing to chance it for a beach location in the off-season. That should help ease the travel stress, no?
Room rates start at $150 a night this week.
Location from JFK: 14.5 miles

Renaissance Orlando Airport

Just wanted to promote the Renaissance Orlando Airport. You have to see it to believe the renovations with a "Around the World" theme. The place feels like a boutique-y museum.
