Where to Dine in New York on Christmas Day

Snowstorm and canceled flights left you stranded in New York City for the holidays? Avoiding your family? A foreigner? Just hate cooking? Look, we know how it is. We were Christmas orphans just a few years ago, but wound up having a lovely gourmet holiday feast at Town in the Chambers Hotel. (Some people like to do the movie-and-Chinese-food thing but we find that a tad depressing.) New York hotels are used to catering to its holiday orphans, and many offer special Christmas menus. Here are three that stand out this year.

For the Traditionalist
The Plaza What could make your heart swell with gooey Christmas good vibes more than walking up the steps into the Plaza Hotel and strolling through to The Oak Room? The legendary restaurant is doing three-course meals on both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day for $110 per person. Christmas Eve is a supper served from 5:30–9 p.m. that includes "a sextet of appetizers," and entrees like ham and lobster pot pie. On the 25th you can dine between 12–8 p.m., and the menu is a hybrid of brunch and dinner.

We'd skip the homemade granola (it's the Plaza!), but could totally get into old-school fare like lobster eggs Benedict and crème caramel with gingerbread. Rooms are available on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, from $755 a night.

For Stranded Ex-Pats
Crosby Street Hotel Brits snowed in or staying in NYC to spend all those pounds "Mum" sends over can get their English on at The Crosby Bar, which is doing a hearty meal for dinner on Christmas Eve and for lunch and dinner on Christmas Day. It's $100 per person for a three-course spread plus cheese board. We like the sound of the Foie gras parfait pot appetizers and would have a hard time choosing from the mains—roast turkey, beef, or loin of pork, as well as scallops, truffle risotto, and grilled snapper. Rooms are available on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, from $475 a night.

For the No-Fuss Foodie
The Ritz-Carlton Central Park We've already mentioned how impressed we were with the non-snooty vibe of Laurent Tourondel's BLT Market, so we love the idea of a fresh, modern spin on the classic Christmas menu, but housed inside a traditionally grand Ritz-Carlton decked out for the holidays. The restaurant is doing a three-course prix-fixe menu for $95 per person on Christmas Day, from 1–9 p.m.

What looks good? Lobster, truffles, tenderloin, an orange-glazed maple leaf duck—and for dessert, Tourondel's take on a Buche de Noel (Christmas log), made of milk chocolate and chestnut with a hazelnut sauce. Rooms are available on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, from $755 a night.

This Post Just Makes Me Hungry

With the 2010 holiday season coming up I wonder what will be on the menu at these fine restaurants mentioned above. For me, I love the BLT Market. Even though I've never been there at Christmas or during the holiday, I have been there a few times with my new home building clients when they are in town for lunch or dinner. During lunch on sunny days the light that pours into this place is awesome and it's right near the park (maybe a snowy walk) so it really great. If you like veggies, they are outstanding. And they cook fish superbly.
