This decor may not change

Rezidor is on fashionable fire at the moment. Having spent the last six months launching Hotel Missoni in Edinburgh and announcing plans to open up branches in Oman, South Africa, Kuwait and Brazil, it announced last week that it would be taking over one of the Milan fashpack’s old haunts: the Chedi, which is currently closed after a name change (to the Virtus) earlier this year failed to bring in the punters.

But this isn’t for another Missoni (a fashion hotel in the fashion capital of the world? Perish the thought). They’re going to turn it into a Radisson Blu – their second Italian property (there’s one in Rome).

At first we were sad to get this news. Although we’d never been to the Chedi, we’d heard good things about it, and the Chedi brand (there are others in Bali, Thailand and Oman, which our profligate former boss swore was the best hotel in the world). Rezidor owns 370 hotels across the world, and we didn’t want things going down the chainy route.

But then we looked over on TripAdvisor and found that all had not been well in the Chedi fold before its closure, with talk of bad service and a lousy location.

Nothing Rezidor can do about the location, and interestingly enough, they don’t seem to be making many changes inside, either. Radisson Blu is Rezidor’s “chic, contemporary and design-orientated” brand, and they’re sticking with the Asia-meets-Italy look designed for the Chedi by top Indonesian firm Jaya & Associates.

In fact, we’re not sure visitors will notice much difference. Except perhaps in the rates – the Chedi charged upwards of €764, while you can get a room at the Rome Radisson next week for €195.

We’ll soon see. Radisson Blu Milan is slated to open in the first quarter of next year.
