Ooh, here's a story that involves condos, tax evasion, a tropical paradise, and the grand tradition of drinking Bellinis. (And, no, it's got nothing to do with Bernie Madoff.) We're talking about Cipriani Miami, which is meant to be bringing classic Italian luxury to South Beach in, uh ... the summer of 2010? We wish we could be more optimistic about that target opening date, but we feel like we've seen this movie before.

The first tell-tale sign that we should keep our hopes conservative? The Summer 2010 opening date hasn't changed since we last checked in back in March. And that came after about a year of radio silence from the Cipriani team. Now, an anonymous tipster with a condo across the street on Collins Ave tells us that there has been "a lot of work lately" but that the Summer 2010 does not seem realistic given what they're seeing.

Construction is a good sign, however up in New York, Giuseppe Cipriani is again getting himself into the gossip columns, by suddenly re-appearing in New York after a year abroad. (You may recall that Giuseppe and his dad Arrigo pleaded guilty to tax evasion in 2007. Papa went back to Italy, and Giuseppe stayed in the U.S., temporarily, to run the shop.)

What does this mean for The Cipriani Ocean Resort and Club Residences? Giuseppe's rep told Page Six that he was back in town (legally) for some "business meetings." Here's hoping one of those is all about kicking the work on Cipriani Miami into gear.
