Despite the initial reports, it looks like the EPIC Hotel and Residencesin Miami has been cleared by the Miami-Dade Health Department in the case of the guest who died from Legionaire's Disease.

We listened in on a press conference held late yesterday by the Miami-Dade Health Department and they were very insistent that the EPIC Hotel had nothing to do with the fatality of the foreigner who stayed at the hotel earlier this fall. Apparently, the source of the illness came from somewhere else although the health department would not release the name of the source and kept repeating that the investigation was ongoing.

However, the department did admit that tests were still being conducted on the hotel. Two other hotel guests have also become ill but there is no definitive report out on whether or not that had anything to do with the EPIC Hotel.

The hotel remains closed to guests and a rep tells us that the hotel will wait until the health department’s investigation is complete. As expected, we'll update you on when the EPIC Hotel opens again to guests.

How reckless!

The details were so vague to begin with, shame on the Miami Health Department!

How horrible

What an awful PR disaster for this hotel and it's future.  Can you imagine trying to move forward after all the negative publicity?  Most people won't hear about the exoneration.  Only the fact that this was the Legionnaire's hotel.

I think a name change is in order.

Apologies are in order on behalf of Hotel Chatter!

It's ridiculous how fast media outlets were to bash the Epic Hotel before all of the facts were released. This definitely hurt the public perception of the hotel. SHAME...

Hotel bashing?

When the news broke, we called the EPIC PR reps and they sent us a statement which we printed nearly in full in this story. Was someone else bashing the hotel?

hotel

Agreed

Not a very impressive post for Hotel Chatter.  First to slam the hotel and city when there might be an issue, then nothing when they're proven to be as wrong as all of the other media jackals.

Slamming and bashing...

...Are not words I would use to describe our posts on the situation but I fully respect your position. And I'm sorry that we disappointed you.

Rebecca, the author of the story that the GrandHotelier linked to above, commented here to explain herself.

At this point, the EPIC hotel is still under investigation and tests are being done on its water filtration system. It is still closed to guests. You can read more at the Miami Herald.

In the meantime, we're just waiting for the hotel to open again.

I went to check in on the 12th

They handled the situation seamlessly.  I was greeted by staff who confirmed I intended to check in.  He said there would be no water for 4-5 days due to some contamination.  He brought us to the desk, explained we were being moved to the Intercontinental Hotel which was just down the block.  The Intercontinental was beautiful, not new like the Epic, but very very nice,  Epic covered the cost of the Intercontinental and gave us a voucher to try the hotel again in the future for free.  The hotel was absolutely gorgeous, I intend to go back once this matter is cleared up.
