Where To Stay for Art Basel Miami Beach

Thanksgiving may be just around the corner, but so is one of the most pivotal dates on the Miami social calendar: Art Basel. So if you’re an art geek or just like crashing artist parties, it’s time to start thinking about where you’ll stay in Miami for this year’s show, which takes place December 3–6.

With artworks by over 2,000 artists on display, Art Basel events will be held all over town, from South Beach to the Design District, where many of the artist studios are located. But the center of all the public exhibitions and events is the Miami Beach Convention Center, towards the north of South Beach’s Art Deco district.

All this means there are plenty of hip hotels within walking distance, from the Sanctuary, the Catalina and the Riviera, to the Raleigh, Setai, and W South Beach. Also nearby is a new outdoor venue for this year, at Collins Park, between 21st and 22nd Streets. Known as the Oceanfront, it will be the site of a café, beach concerts, and the Art Basel Conversations series.

Of course, many of Miami’s boutique and luxury properties are offering Art Basel packages and promotions, which we’ll take a look at all this week on HotelChatter. The Art Basel organizers are also helping art-lovers by working with an agency, Turon Travel, which has secured special rates at a long list of participating hotels. Their preferred hotels, however are The Shore Club, the Delano, and the Mondrian South Beach. For those with plenty of cash to splash around on paintings, installations, and fancy hotel rooms, Turon Travel is offering “Special Premium Hotel Packages” at the Fontainebleau, Doubletree Surfcomber, Z Ocean Hotel, Hyatt Regency Miami, and the Mandarin Oriental.

The Fontainebleau starts at $199 a night through this Premium Package—but that’s for a 7-night stay. (It’s $289 a night for a 3–4 night stay.) That’s a deal when compared to booking through the Fontainebleau directly—a standard room starts at $429 a night for Art Basel dates—but comparable to good old Expedia, which has Fontainebleau rooms for Dec 3–6 at $286 a night.

Stay tuned for more Art Basel hotel news this week, and if you’re heading to Miami for the show, please send us your tips and let us know where you’ll be resting your head after days and nights spent trawling galleries and art parties.

Art Basel MIAMI

I am originally from MIAMI Beach, I know the beach like the back of my hand. The place to stay during Basel is the Setai. However, ART lovers who stop by Miami to check out the ART rather than the models will no doubt be wowed by the Sagamore on Collins. The place is an ART hotel- a great lobby filled with an amazing private art collection. A great restaurant (try the Lamb Gnocchi) as well as a hip pool scene, which also was the location of Spencer Tunick's Miami Beach Nude series back in 2007. The Mondrian is okay but if you are staying on the bay-side of South Beach check into The Standard- great pool, nice rooms and it's location usually insures that only the well heeled and FOC's (friends of the concierge)attend what usually turn out to be the best parties.
