When we had the chance to check out The Surrey Hotel’s $60-million “re-creation,” we were impressed by the sheer prettiness of the new guest rooms. But not everyone shares our take. Over at the UK site, Globalista Travel Journal, this week The Surrey copped a dressing down for what the nameless reviewer called “a pointless refurbishment.” In the nature of being “fair and balanced,” we decided to compare Globalista’s opinion to recent reviews on TripAdvisor.

Let’s start with those Gloablista grumbles, shall we? The things that ticked them off included: a huge discrepancy in the size of the lowest category Deluxe Salon rooms (some box-like and others spacious, but the same price); the noise; spotty housekeeping service; the complicated or non-functional TV; and the lack of weekend breakfast until 8 a.m. Globalista also said, “The 1920s homage to Lanvin decor is quite simply ghastly.”

They don’t mince words, those Brits. However, over on TripAdvisor, The Surrey has received two stellar reviews since the “re-creation,” both giving it 5 of 5 stars. The most impressive part of each stay seems to have been the service. One reviewer, upon having “a little inconvenience” with his room, spoke to a check-in clerk called Marco. Here’s a sample:

it was amazing how he listened us very carefully even when we were rude and with a attitude… He WOW us!! Also, we liked the fact that he invited us to come back to visit The Surrey and he offered himself to help us to make a reservation for the next time, it was incredible!!

The other TripAdvisor reviewer also singled out the service, saying, “It was almost as if every employee was the hotel's concierge! Small details, like pronouncing my name correctly on the phone, (a rarity in most properties) were always considered and even more thoughtfully completed.”

This person also liked the décor which so offended Globalista:

The rooms are on par, if not better, than many of the great hotels of the world. Small touches like hand-painted decals on the armoire and dark wood tones make you feel cozy … The king size bed was inviting and plush; the desk ergonomic and just the right size.”

Of course, one never knows the true identity of TripAdvisor reviewers, but we can’t say we know the Globalista grumbler either. So which is it? We look forward to more reviews of The Surrey to appear, and any tips from readers who’ve had the pleasure of plunking down $500+ for a night there.
