Located at Lake Como (a.k.a., George Clooney's home away from Hollywood), the property is described as the former "playground" of queens and aristocrats which was turned into a hotel during the late 19th Century. Says the resort's website:
"Villa d'Este was built in 1568 as the summer residence of Cardinal Tolomeo Gallio. The property comprises 25 acres of gardens whose statues and landscapes have been photographed for centuries."
This historical fodder should give you a hint as to who their target clientele is today.
If you're already plunking down the money to frolic lakeside with the likes of the world's wealthiest travelers, then consider one of the Private Villas, which includes total hotel access, plus a private butler and chef service in the villa itself. Ornate antiques and art adorn its rooms, and if the "you break it, you buy it" policy applies here, we suggest hands-off the bedside table vase. Silk bedding, private boat tours of the lake, and gourmet meals are a few of the other taken-for-granted perks.
But, honestly, this is kind of a gentle foray into the world of opulent accommodations. You can stay there starting at around 490 euro per night, which isn't nearly as exorbitant as we thought the base rate would be. For that price, feel free to call yourself "Count" or "Countess" during the duration of your stay.
