The Best of In-Room Hotel Coffee Makers

November 4, 2009 at 4:34 PM | by | Comments (4)

Not all that long ago, your choices for getting coffee came down to two options--one, order it up from room service at an insane price like $12 for small pot or get your hands dirty trying to figure out the mini-Mr. Coffee machine in your room.

The latter was always cause for frustration since we hardly know how to work our own coffee machine at 6am, let alone someone else's. Also, paper filters may very well be the devil's child and have you ever tried to get coffee percolating in a cramped bathroom? Heinous. Oh the things we will do for an early morning java jolt.

But then came the invention of single cup coffee which has made life easier not only for desperate housewives across America and the bored office employee at the universal afternoon break time of 3:30pm but also for us, hotel guests.

We've been noticing more and more of these single cup coffee machines in hotel rooms all over. Some are brand names you recognize like Keurig and Wolfgang Puck's while others are smaller, almost no-name brands. A few are even hotel-branded, like the Westin's cute WakeCup Coffee maker.

So we decided to put together a gallery of all the in-room coffee makers we liked the best, plus a couple of bonus espresso makers. Most of these are free to hotel guests but always check before you brew. And remember, these modern coffee makers are here today but could easily be replaced by VIA from Starbucks tomorrow.

Got your own in-room coffee maker photo that you want to share? Send 'em to us.

Richardson Hotel, Perth

I have to add this hotel to the list (photo to come!) because I woke up this morning dragging from jet lag, and was able to make my own cappucino thanks to the espresso machine AND milk steamer in the room. Love it!

That's Australia for you

Coffee is taken seriously in Australia (I miss it), and even the crappiest motel will have some form of coffee maker in the room. I've had Aussie friends visit New York and been horrified by the lack of coffee and tea-making facilities in their hotel rooms.

Recent coffee makers I tried and liked were in rooms at The Viceroy Miami and the W South Beach.

espresso

That Baglioni espresso maker is giving me the shakes...in a good way.

details

Well that's a detail that distinguishes a really classy hotel. And with class I'm not referring in luxury but in personalized guest treatment that seems to be so much difficult to find these days.
