Kimpton To Have A Foursome In Chicago With The Hotel Palomar

October 9, 2009 at 8:48 AM | by JetSetCD | 1 Comment

On Monday, we went inside of Kimpton Hotels' newest property, the Ink48 Hotel in Manhattan. It had animal-print robes, free wireless internet, and pretty spacious rooms by New York standards; we liked it. This opening will hardly be the last in a while for Kimpton however, as in May 2010, they plan to open the Hotel Palomar over in Chicago, bringing another of their brands to the Windy City.

As it is, Chicago already has three other Kimpton Hotels: The Hotel Monaco, The Hotel Burnham, and The Hotel Allegro, so do they really need another?

The answer, after the jump.

YES. Chicago absolutely needs another hotel. We can't recommend a trip to this city more, and with tourist numbers echoing our positive feelings, the are simply too few boutique hotels to choose from. Plus, the Palomar will have an indoor pool—a rarity in any urban environment. As an added bonus, it'll be in the River North neighborhood versus downtown, so restaurants like Vong's Thai Kitchen and Vermilion are right around the corner.

It looks like they're pretty confidant about opening in spring, since the Palomar is already accepting reservations for May 1, 2010 and later. So who will be the biggest competition for the new Palomar? Our bets are on The James, but then the Palomar should be priced a tad lower and therefore skew more family and casual traveler-friendly.

Is The James the only player?

How about the Dana Hotel and Spa 2 blocks north on State Street from the new Palomar?  It's the only independently owned boutique in the city.  Or The Wit by Double Tree 5 blocks south.  Or the Felix Hotel a block west of the Palomar...all boutiques.  I agree Chicago needs more of a boutique presence, but in River North The James is not the only player.
