According to The Betsy's chairman and principal partner, Jonathan Plutzik, Dr. Briggs' mission will be to "build our business and make the world a better place." That may be a bit more ambitious than the job description of your average hotel worker, but Briggs appears up to the task. The Baltimore resident has 30 years of experience bringing non-profit groups together with deep-pocketed people and businesses. Plus, she has way more degrees than you. (A Doctorate in Arts Education, Masters in Education, Master of Science, Bachelors Degree, and a certificate in Public Policy.) Also: she looks upbeat and happy: See?

When it comes to Doing Good, Briggs, Plutzik and fellow Betsy owner Lesley Goldwasser are most interested in education, medical research, nonprofit sustainability, the arts, culture, and African Relief. They also like to rock. That's why one of the hotel's first big philanthropic events involves the John Lennon Educational Tour Bus.
This recording studio on wheels will be parked near The Betsy on Saturday, November 7, from 6 p.m. to midnight. People are encouraged to bring photos, songs, and stories reflecting on the service of our soldiers, to make recordings that will be streamed for viewers kicking back on The Betsy's terrace on Ocean Drive. The event is part of Sleepless Night, an evening of free cultural events in South Beach. Four days later, The Betsy will host a red-carpet premiere of a documentary called Revisiting History: Honoring Soldiers and their Families.
Think of it as a way to atone for all those shallow, debauched things you went to Miami for in the first place.
