When we reported that the historic Tudor Hotel was set to become a Hilton in March 2010, one commenter was not pleased. The concern? That a piece of hotel history would be ravaged by a cookie-cutter chain. Often, this is what happens when old gems are “updated,” but renovations on historic buildings can also be kind of awesome. We don’t know which it will be for the Tudor yet, but we do know who will be responsible for part of the spruce-up: Therese Virserius Design.

The lobby in its present form.

The firm led by Swedish-born, New York-based Therese Virserius, has been tapped to work on the Tudor’s lobby, with work beginning in November.

The brief was “to create a vibrant and hip lobby, inclusive of a lounge and bar for the Tudor City Hilton.” The designers plan to “skillfully merge” the old-world and the contemporary with:

Materials such as Corian, reclaimed wood, back painted wall glass, and large floor slabs. Rich color hues in gray, purple, lavender, warmly inviting cream and natural, warm wood tones complete the design by offering a refined, yet playful atmosphere.

Highlights of the lobby area will include:

A sculptural moss installation, full length mirrors, an illuminated check-in area, crackled walls with antique hanging hand mirrors, and silhouettes of men and women depicting different eras in time.

From the rendering of the finished product, it looks like Therese Virserius Design is also loving the pink trend so many hotels are embracing lately. Will this be a case where hip and history can get along? We look forward to finding out, when we treat ourselves to an Old Fashioned at the Tudor come spring.
