The other day we took a look at What's on The Block at the Viceroy Santa Monica, a happening hotel near the beach that is always giving us good enough excuses to get drunk on a random weekday.

But could it be that the guests are also partying too hard? A commenter on our story pointed us to his TripAdvisor review which showed an Empire Suite (about $640 a night) in seriously worn down condition. Cigarette burns in the carpet, wrecked furniture and low shower head pressure were some of the complaints.

Needless to say our commenter was pretty unhappy about having paid so much for just a so-so room. We were sort of shocked ourselves since we've stayed in a regular room not too long ago and the room, while definitely not brand, spanking new, it was in good condition.

We asked the hotel's rep if they could comment on the situation for us and they told us they would answer the TripAdvisor review instead. Here's what Caroline Dyal, Director of Hotel Operations, wrote:

Thank you for your feedback regarding your recent stay at Viceroy Santa Monica. I was most disappointed to read about your experience and I sincerely apologize that you were subjected to such flaws; they are not indicative of the quality of our overall hotel facilities.

I would like to reassure your facility-based concerns by confirming that we do indeed have a renovation scheduled for the very near future and are rehabilitating the furniture pieces in this and similar rooms. In addition, the wear and tear that was evident in your room have all been addressed and corrected during our regular preventative maintenance program.

In regards to the water pressure, all of our room facilities and amenities are designed with eco-consciousness in mind and our low-flow showerheads reflect our conservation efforts.

I apologize it was not to your liking and we will address this valuable feedback at the time of renovation. I would like to speak with you further to personally address these concerns and can be reached at 310-434-2802. I certainly hope we have an opportunity to speak and to welcome you back in the future.

So there you have it. The Viceroy Santa Monica will probably be getting an upgrade. Which, by the way, is a smart idea since this is the flagship property in what is now a larger hotel collection.
