Why We Won't Be Staying at the Hilton Fayrouz in Sharm El Sheikh

Let us preface this post by saying that we are not hotel snobs. We can take just as much pleasure in spending the night in a bamboo shack on the beach (more of that tomorrow) as we do checking out the latest fancypants hotel (although we’ll make sure we’re wearing full-cover, Damian Barr-style PJs in the shack – just to make sure of those sheets).

However, if a hotel is trading under a brand like, oh, say, Hilton, we do expect it to be a certain standard. And that standard is a little higher than a lobby that makes us want to run straight back to the airport:

Or loungers that we wouldn’t want to sit on even with a backrest and five towels to save us from the germs:

Or empty activity boards, or signs trying to wangle money out of us for all our food and drinks, but covering this up as being for our own good:

Or pavements that look like half the hotel bled all over them:

Not that this is a dealbreaker for us, but we’re also confused by the fan in the middle of the grounds in the main pic. Nice idea, but didn’t seem to be doing much in the 93 degree heat.

So, all things considered, we won’t be making a booking at the Hilton Sharm El Sheikh Fayrouz Resort any time soon. Especially because to stay one night there this week would cost you a minimum $260 – yes, $260. Presumably you can get it cheaper on a package deal, but we wouldn’t be able to tell you, because when we asked at reception what the room rates were, the guy gave us a long hard stare and said: “Look them up on the internet.”

May we be bold enough to suggest that you fork out $100 more, and go down the road to the Four Seasons? Because of all the hotels we saw over 10 days in Egypt, that was the only one that was worth more than about $70 a night*. Honestly, three days there would be better than a week here. Promise.

*Disclosure: The writer stayed at the Four Seasons as guests of the hotel as part of a feature for another magazine.
