Temperature: 77 degrees. Weather: partly cloudy. Time: to check in to the W Barcelona.

Western Europe’s first W, and the snazzily-numbered 33rd in the world, has opened its doors today. The Bliss therapists are unwinding tense muscles right now, the Eclipse staff are girding cocktail glasses with sugar, and the head honchos must be breathing a big sigh of relief that its third predicted opening date has finally come through. And right now, that pool must be looking a little less peaceful.

You can still get in tonight for €280 ($408/£255), but it’s now fully booked for the weekend – not bad for a 473-roomer, no? Opening rates are holding pretty high – next week, a double will set you back €265 ($386/£241) – but there are some good-looking packages. Like the Sea Breeze, Spanish Ease, which, with a two night stay, nets you two welcome cocktails, an appetizer in the restaurant, Bliss gift set, manicure, late check out, breakfast and room upgrade.

According to the website, you can get this from €249 ($363/£227) a night; the cheapest we can see it for is €319 ($464/£291), but that’s still not a bad price.

Or you could cross your fingers that it starts turning up on Hotwire listings (it doesn’t yet – we just checked). We live in hope.

W Hotel Barcelona Opens up

Stopped by the W last night expecting a major scene... Could have been the rain. The hotel is still working out the kinks The Pool Area looks great , during the day you get a view of the coast. However, the Hotel is missing the WoW factor. No glam, something is askew. Maybe the W hipness is in crates stuck in spanish customs...

Opening day does not mean Opening party

W Barcelona succesfully opened on October 1st. The hotel is finished and ready to service and wow customers, believe me. The opening party will take place when the time is right for the hotel to accommodate the many VIPs and glamourous invitees who will for sure participate. That was unfortunately not possible on D-Day, the hotel enjoying a healthy, high occupancy for several days in a row that required every staff member's attention.
Do not worry, the WoW factor will be there... stay tuned!
