2009 New York City Hotel Openings Preview

January 6, 2009 at 11:30 AM | by juliana | 9 Comments

We told you that the Hotel Hype machine would be alive and kicking in 2009 despite the gloomy-as-all-hell economic outlook for the hospitality industry and oh yeah, for the rest of the world. But 2009 is also shaping up to be a year with several new very cool hotels on the horizon, not just in New York but around the world. (All these were pipe dreams cemented no doubt in the boom hotel years from 2004-2006.)

So every Tuesday we are going to bring you a new edition of 2009 Openings Previews, starting today with the original--New York City. 2008 was a banner year for NYC hotels. Thompson opened up LES, feuding hoteliers Matt Moss and Greg Peck opened Cooper Square, Sean MacPherson is trying his hand at a hip budget hotel and Andre Balazs finally and barely just opened up The Standard NYC before 2008 took its last bow.

Those guys and their hotels are officially old news. Now, who's next?

SMYTH
86 West Broadway
Scheduled Opening :: Early January 2009

Ok, so we still have one more Thompson Hotel to obsess over whether it will open or not. After a false start last week, the boutique collection's Tribeca hotel has readied its opening date once more for January 12th. And while Quikbook is offering reservations starting January 16th, there's always a chance this could again be pushed back another week. And don't expect the hotel's restaurant and bar to be open either. You know how Thompson takes their sweet time with that.

Opening Date Prediction :: Definitely sometime in January 2009

· Smyth Now Opening January 12th

Vu Hotel
653 Eleventh Ave
Scheduled Opening :: February 2009

Kimpton Hotels is looking to strike it hot on the Westside with their third NYC hotel--The Vu Hotel, which will presumably offer killer views of the Hudson River and New Jersey. The hotel was scheduled for a Fall 2008 opening but we've gotten near-hysterical confirmation from a hotel rep that the hotel will indeed open on February 16th.

Opening Date Prediction :: Probably February 2009, but maybe March
Vu Hotel Stories:
· The Vu Hotel Coverage
· No View from The Vu Until February

Ace Hotel
Broadway and 29th Street
Scheduled Opening :: February 2009

Ace Hotels is taking their popular West Coast hipster brand to the big city and its scheduled opening is February 1st. Aside from West Coast cool, the hotel will have rooms designed to look like your hip friend's apartment. There will also be a restaurant from the people who bought you the hugely popular Spotted Pig. The opening date seems pretty locked down, especially since their website is open. (And Quikbook too.) However, the hotel is renovating a building that still has some angry tenants inside. And we've learned from the troubles at the Jane Hotel how hard that makes a hotel opening.

Opening Date Prediction :: March 2009 to work out all the kinks.
Ace Hotel Stories:
· Ace Hotel NYC
· Ace Hotel Portland

The Crosby Street Hotel
270 Lafayette Street
Schedule Opening :: March 2009

The Crosby Hotel is scheduled to hit the city in March. We're actually very eager to check this hotel out as it comes from an across the pond hotel collection, Firmdale Hotels. A liquor license was recently approved and a hotel rep told us March was still the date but there was no other news. Maybe that's just the British reserve they are throwing at us or maybe there's some issues behind the scenes. Skeptics that we are, we tend to think the latter.

Opening Date Prediction :: Summer 2009
Crosby Street Hotel Stories:
· Crosby Street Hotel Coverage

Gansevoort Park Avenue
420 Park Avenue South
Schedule Opening :: May 2009

When the Gansevoort's sister location on Park Avenue South was announced, it came along with an opening date of May 2009. But clearly, a photo from the construction site this past July has us worried. Throw in all the development and construction woes plaguing hotels today and we say this one might not even make it to the books. If it does, it's a ways off.

Opening Date Prediction :: Winter 2010

OTHER HOTEL OPENINGS UPDATES

Tsk, Tsk, Tsk: Will these hotels ever open?
While 2008 was a good year for most NYC hotels, some did not open on time. The 2008 delinquents include:

· The Chatwal (formerly the Lamb's Club from Vikram Chatwal), February 1, 2009.
· Andaz Hotels (Wall Street and Midtown), Mid-2009 for Wall Street; Late 2009 for Midtown
· Sanctuary Hotel (a perennial delinquent on this list), early 2009

Eagerly Anticipating
· W New York Downtown, October 2009.
· The Wolf NYC (from the Iron Horse Hotel people), Spring 2009.
· Hotel Ludlow NYC, early 2009.
· Dream Downtown Hotel, early 2009
· Hotel Indigo, July 2009.

Have info, tips, or photos on any of the above NYC hotel openings? You know where to send 'em.

    Are they having any profits?

    I understand many hotels foundations were laid before the crisis times and when Hotel Business was at it's peak. Now what I want to know how hotels are operating to cut their costs? Some Airlines cut down their cutlery and magazines to reduce weight of the airline and save fuel. Each sector trying hard to save costs, it would be good to know whether the big hotels are operating on break-even or coronado ranch homes going in loss.

    Is Smyth Open Yet?

    After going through a rough breakup, someone suggested a romantic lover's getaway to New York so I was planning a trip to The Big Apple in the fall (well, that is if I ever get my ex girlfriend back) and I really like the look of Smyth. Is Quikbook still taking reservations for these hotels?

    Great info

    This shows that there are still some pockets of new hotels opening up here. It just makes getting hotel reservations that much more fun.
