The Giant Windsail in Barcelona Will Become a W Hotel

In late 2009, visitors flying into Barcelona will see what looks to be a giant windsail on the coast right next to the entrance to the Port of Barcelona. Except this windsail is actually the W Hotel Barcelona scheduled to open on October 1, 2009.

The W Hotel Barcelona will be the second W to open in Europe (W Istanbul was the first) and the first W in Spain. But like all Ws it will debut with a bang due to its location right at the foot of the Mediterranean Sea in a building designed by Spain’s most famous architect Ricardo Bofill.

Containing 473 rooms and 67 suites, the W Barcelona will also have "several world-world class gourmet restaurants", a "sensual rooftop bar" and of course the normal W standards--indoor and outdoor WET pool, a Bliss spa, Living Room/Lobby area and Whatever/Whenever service.

Not only that, but it seems as though some of the public areas (including the 10,000 square foot ballroom) will be located on the terrace that sticks out from the midsection of the building. How 'bout them views!

Since the hotel was originally supposed to open in 2008, then moved to April of 2009, we wouldn't be surprised to see the opening date for October 1st date moved again, but we'll keep you posted.

And as for that giant windsail moniker? We didn't just make it up. Even the locals are calling it the "Barcelona Sail Hotel". Well you know, in their native Spanish and Catalonian.

    Jenna,

I bet I know why!  Did you ever see that episode of Everybody Loves Raymond where Mrs. Barone takes up sculpting and she makes that sculpture?  Thats what this hotel reminds me of - that sculpture ... and if you saw the episode you'll know what this new W reminds me of!

Make sure you ask for a room with window.  Looks like those will go fast.

    Barcelona W

It definitely reminds me of her sculpture, too.  That reminder is supposed to be 'subconcious' effective - in other words, men love it because they love stuff like that - and women love it because - well, because I think men design it and THINK women want to look at stuff like that.  ;-)  I am willing to bet the design architect is a male - no matter who the design 'firm' is.

    W Barcelona Will WoW You!

    Greetings from Spain!
Just for yr info, this is one of the original drafts of the project at least 5 or 6 years old... construction is quite advanced and will be ready by the end of Summer; building doesn't look much like above drawing, believe me.
Wanna see a picture taken last week?. It's mobile quality but still gives you and idea of where we are: http://www.hotelchatter.com/files/22098/W_Barcelona_Now.JPG
By the way, all rooms will enjoy a WoW view, no need to rush to get one!

    Saludos!
