New Hilton San Diego Bayfront Is Good, But Nothing Too Special
Every so often we feature a hotel review from one of our readers that we feel should be shared with the rest of you dear hotel guests. These reviews are highlighted because they are timely, about cool hotels in cool places and are relatively level-headed. Think you can submit one just like this? Send it in. Today's review comes from Reader M., who is hangin' in San Diego with a bunch of hospitality bigwigs at the ALIS Conference. Enjoy.
After a serious setback during construction last year, the brand new Hilton San Diego Bayfront soft-opened in December and looks to us, well, like a Hilton from the outside, at least. Supposedly, the hotel has a pretty awesome lobby design, which we got a glimpse of back in November.
Our reader reports on the rest of the interior:
Inside, the lobby is all white marble and open spaces, with modern, retro furniture (and not much of it)! The whole hotel, from the lobby areas (actually one level above street level, accessed from a massive motorway which takes you up a tall ramp from the street) to the lower level which house the spa looks very spacious and under-furnished. Looks like they're still waiting for a few loads of furniture to make the place inviting and comfortable.
Interesting. Our reader also mentioned here is a bar on the lobby level called "OdySea: A Liquid Adventure" (har har) and a restaurant called Vela on the Promenade level, which is right around the corner from an under-construction FOX Sports Grill.
Up in the rooms, we were startled by that electric blue bedskirt but our reader had other things on his mind:
The guest rooms are brand new, but feel "cheap". The millwork is real wood, but looks like inexpensive veneer.
The bathrooms are very ordinary and small. Some have stall showers, some have tub/shower combinations, but the tubs feel miniature, and the shower fixtures are nothing special. The same millwork is carried out in the bathroom, although the vanities have drawers, which you don't find in many places. Granite counter tops, but again, nothing special. No makeup mirrors.
Rooms also come with two phones: one corded, one wireless. A 40" LG flatscreen TV and a Cuisinart 2-cup drip coffee maker in each room as well (with Lavazza Coffee and real china mugs, Lavazza logoed).
So, all in all: seems like a good experience, but nothing spectacular or life-changing. Sounds like a Hilton is a Hilton.
