Last weekend we stayed at The Chelsea in Atlantic City which is Atlantic City's first non-gaming boutique hotel. Yet despite the lack of blackjack tables and the ring-ding-ding of the slot machines, we were impressed--and so were other guests.

The Chelsea is located in the southern part of Atlantic City, even though most of the casino action is a few blocks north, its closest neighbor is the Tropicana, so it isn't completely in the sticks. The distance to the northern part of town may upset some heavy gamblers, yet it will please those looking for a low-stress vacation.

We stayed in Room 1214 which is a "Chelsea Luxe" room. The Luxe rooms are in the tower portion of the hotel and are bigger than the "Chelsea Lite" rooms, which have all the same amenities, and should be open by October or November.

Parking
We arrived at the Chelsea and valet parked our car (there is no self-parking on-site). It's $15 when you arrive on Friday-Sunday nights, $10 Monday-Thursday - but! They only charge you once even if you stay multiple days. The valet parkers and baggage carriers valet attendants and bellmen were surprisingly kind and upbeat, its nice to see people who like their job.

Check-In
Checking into the room was quick and easy, and we were quickly met by the baggage carrier who escorted us to the room and gave us a tour of it. We were even shown the concierge who is on staff full time.

Room
Walking into the room we could see the nostalgic feel that the Chelsea is trying to achieve. The furniture has an old-fashioned look to it and we could swear some are even original pieces, but it still doesn't feel "old". The HUGE flat screen LCD TV definitely doesn't feel old. The room also had an iPod dock and plenty of electrical outlets for charging all your gadgets.

Then we walked into the bathroom which was enormous - and OMG - Kiehls bathroom amenities! Yea, we felt a little like Paris Hilton. Our room had a two-person shower with a rain showerhead, but we measured and you could easily fit 4 people in there. Heh.

Pool
This is where the Chelsea's party scene happens. They have two pools-- one freshwater and one salt-water, both with a dedicated bar. Even better, the salt-water pool will be open all year round. In the Florida Room, the biggest Jacuzzi we have ever seen is in the shape of a four-leaf clover and can fit up to 15 people. It's also right next to the steam rooms.

We made a short attempt to sun at the pool, but at the Chelsea, the morning is for the Pool, and the afternoon is for the beach as the building acts as a huge sundial over the pool area.

Although, we did get to see a rising rousing rendition of the Backstreet Boys by the lifeguard. Your experience may vary.

Upcoming Stay Alert: Salt-water pool, Jacuzzi, steam room, and spa will not be open until October or November.

Beach and Boardwalk
The Chelsea is just steps from the boardwalk, so if you want to experience the Atlantic City beach during the summer The Chelsea has lounge chairs, umbrellas, towels, and an attendant all waiting for you on the beach - free of charge for guests. You can also reserve cabanas with mahogany floors and super comfy lounge chairs. Food and drinks are provided by Teplitzky's and are brought right to your sand castle.

Since our visit coincided with the reminants of Hurricane Hanna, we didn't get to the beach, but we could clearly see all the attendants battening down the hatches over on the beach.

The Chelsea also offers complimentary bicycles to ride on the boardwalk, as well as "hotel cars" those wicker carts with attendants that push people around the boardwalk.

Bottom Line
Even though the expectations were high for this hotel - we were still impressed. We even asked a number of fellow guests we met around the hotel what they thought - and everyone said the same thing.

We are officially proclaiming that The Chelsea is a true-to-life boutique hotel.

Check back all this week for more articles on our stay including interviews with Curtis Bashaw and the General Manager of Teplitzky's

    baggage carriers?! seriously??

as a former "baggage carrier" myself, i can assure you that we never use that term. we generally prefer bellmen/women.

do we call them checker-iners or car parkers or drink order takers? i think not.

    and what's a rising rendition?

The bed looks amazing but that furniture looks all sorts of wacked out. Also is the tower rooms or the Chelsea Luxe rooms the old Howard Johnson rooms?

Neither - the all the tower rooms are Chelsea Luxe rooms which are located in the former Holiday Inn.

The Chelsea Lite rooms are all located in the former Howard Johnsons.

The most terrible experience I've ever had!

The Chelsea is the worst hotel I have ever stayed in hands down. THE WORST PART IS THAT THE STAFF COULD CARE LESS ABOUT THEIR GUESTS AND THE MANAGERS (IF YOU CAN FIND ONE) DONT CARE EITHER.  On my wedding night i reserved a room for my now wife and myself, and also had 30 other rooms booked for my guests.  Arranged about 5 months in advance we signed a contract stating that we would have our guests stay there for a set fee of $149.00   night.  Excited about the great rate for what we pictured as a beautiful high end hotel, we continued to finalize the rest of our wedding plans satisfied that we had done good!
First and foremost the service was terrible on every level, and i do mean terrible!  It would take a book to write down all the things that happened wrongly to our guests and ourselves that night so I'll just get to the main things. First, upon checking in they had given our room away....yes, the bride and grooms room was given to someone else.  They gave us another room which took about an hour and tried to charge us the same rate, which i had to pay because the GM was unavailable and they said there was nothing they could do.  (It later took me exactly 4 weeks to finally talk with him resulting in him giving us the difference between what we payed for our room and what our guests payed about 300 we got back, not comped but a % refund)I still cant believe that.  Then the day they refunded the money they charged my card for an additional $115.00 for what i have no idea that one is still pending.
The bags we had made up with our names and wedding date filled with goodies that were supposed to be given to all of our guests upon check in, were not given out, but locked in a back room.  We didn't check in until after the reception our guests checked in before the reception, so we had no idea until we got there.  Not to mention the guests i had showing up to my reception in cabs because the front desk lost their reservations and made them wait on hour, tried to charge them double the amount, and then failed to tell them that i had an additional limo sitting out front of the hotel waiting to take them to the reception because i had caught wind of the issue and spoke with my limo company to try and accomidate my guests (something the Chelsea should try).
I just can't believe all the things that went wrong at this hotel, I mean it truly is a nightmare especially on my wedding night because that only happens once.  There are many other stories i could tell and truly fill a book , but i don't have the time.  I am writing this so other couples don't make the same mistake we did, no matter how good they sound when you are booking and everything else the whole tune changes once you get there.  Im still having to deal with the awful mess and its 2 months later.
