What It's Like to Walk Into a Kimpton Hotel Wine-Tasting Hour

On Friday, we walked into the lobby of the Hotel Monaco in Denver to meet a friend and for a moment we were just as bewildered as when we accidentally walked into the men's room at the Denver airport. (True story!) What was going on here?

What is a family reunion? Was it a happy hour meeting spot or was there some sort of convention staying at the hotel? (Keep in mind, this was after the DNC.) All of the chairs and seats were taken and a few people were standing around holding wine glasses. One lucky person was getting a shoulder massage from a therapist from the adjacent Aveda spa. In short, it seemed like a private party.

Then we checked our watch and realized it was 5:46pm and the hotel's wine-tasting hour was still in effect. Ahh...good ole Kimpton's wine-tasting hour. We have to say it's a very, very good perk to offer guests. Especially that shoulder massage one.

The only person not partaking in the festivities was the hotel's pet dog who's bed was empty. That was sad because we really wanted to meet him sans political tuxedo.

Once I was at a Kimpton happy hour at D.C.'s Hotel Rouge (think red wine and Red Stripe beer) when we noticed the majority of the crowd was donning Dept. of Homeland Security name tags. And then (what felt like) as soon as we noticed them they were gone. It was a weird, only-in-D.C. moment, for sure.
