Oh dear. With the political unrest going on in Thailand -- People's Alliance for Democracy protesters are causing the closures of roads and airports -- the country has declared a State of Emergency. The protesters are now threatening to blockade seven (!) airports across Thailand -- but the tourism industry is already feeling the burn from all the hooplah.
At least five nations have warned their citizens about traveling to Thailand, and concerned would-be tourists have started to cancel the trips they'd already planned. The Bangkok Post reports that hotels are really starting to hurt as a result.
Larry Cunningham, the developer of Chava Resort on Surin Beach, said the airport closures had already hurt the tourism industry on Phuket. His recently opened hotel, which was gearing up for its first high season, has already received cancellations for some of its 45 high-end apartments.
Chava Resort had invested in promotion and staff training during the low season and now the employees cannot expect much from service charges.
Yikes. Hopefully they get this settled soon -- until then, head over to our brother site Jaunted for full coverage.
