Today we're hotel-chatting with Louis Sailer, General Manager of the Fullerton Hotel in Singapore. This month the hotel is gearing up for the Formula 1 Grand Prix on September 28 which will speed by the hotel on its course. The race is going to be the world's first night-time race and will surely be a sight to see. But if you can't get to Singapore later this month, the Fullerton is still going to be there. In fact, it's been there since 1928 but not as a hotel. Keep reading to find out more.

HotelChatter: Tells us a little more about the history of the hotel and it's location.

Louis Sailer: The hotel used to be the General Post Office and in 1928 when it was built, it was the tallest building in Singapore. (As he says this, he is pointing to a picture of the hotel which is dwarfed by the modern hotels of today's Singapore.)

Seven years ago it was transformed into a luxury hotel, The Fullerton. It's right on the bay but it's also in the middle of everything. We're within walking distance to the financial district and we're five minutes from great shopping.

HotelChatter: What sets this historic hotel apart from others in the city?

Sailer: Unlike a lot of historic hotels that are old on the outside and the inside, we are old on the outside but new on the inside. We have flat-screen TVs in the rooms and wireless internet. Yet we still have historic touches like high ceilings and Art Deco design.

HotelChatter: With Singapore becoming such a popular destination, how does Fullerton stand out from the rest of the hotels? Like, why should guests come here rather than anywhere else?

Sailer: We're a notch above the rest, especially when it comes to service. We're an independent hotel, so we don't have as many restrictions as bigger hotel brands do. We are constantly changing our standards based on our guest feedback.

We have a loyal followship and guests see our hotel as more like a home. And since we have a lot of repeat guests, they are our biggest ambassadors. That's how we get most of business too--from our guests.

HotelChatter: What are some unique services or amenities that the Fullerton offers for its guests?

Sailer: We have a 24-hour business center, a 24-hour concierge service, a 24-hour fitness center and a 24-hour butler service. We also have an infinity pool, a spa and plenty of meeting space. [Ed note: For amenity geeks, they also have Bulgari toiletries in the guest rooms.]

HotelChatter: What about any fun packages?

Sailer: At Christmastime, which is our peak season, we have a Shopping Concierge who will take care of all your Christmas shopping needs. But we also have an After Hours shopping experience, where you can visit certain stores after hours and do private shopping.

If you want to see a different side of Singapore, we also have a guide who can give you an off-the-track trip around the city. And we're also doing a package in time for the Formula 1 race which will go right by the hotel.

HotelChatter: Well, speaking of cars, what about your own fleet of cars?

Sailer: We have Mercedes "S" Class and "E" Class cars as well as two vintage Rolls Royce. Guests can be chauffeured in these cars around town or we can do pick-up and drop-off at the airport.

HotelChatter: Sounds good to us. Now, when is the best time to stay at the hotel?

Sailer: I would say between August and December. You can get good deals on suites then.

Rates for the Fullerton Hotel begin at $270 USD a night. Suites, which come with access to the Straits Club lounge, begin at $409 USD.
